This book lays the groundwork of systems thinking upon which many modern management and leadership books have been written. While the book has a well-aged feel, the examples are timeless and the content universal.It stands out in the genre of systems thinking literature by addressing the point that’s been bothering many of us: If everyone wants people-centered learning organizations; why don’t they exist? Senge claims it’s because we have no idea the kind of commitment to change that is necessary.That really engaged my attention; I wondered “what exactly does it take to break the vicious cycles?” I don’t want to spoil the experience for you, because the book is certainly worth the short time it takes to read, but here are two ideas that really stood out and may motivate you to find the many others.On the discipline of building shared vision: “It's not what the vision is – it’s what the vision does.”And, surprisingly drawing on the work of theoretical physicist David Bohm during the discussion of Team Learning: ‘Dialogue and discussion are the mechanisms of team learning. Dialogue allows us to expose our thoughts to ourselves; discussion lets us defend them.’

Although it is somewhat evident that this book is a bit older and lacking some modern day examples, “The Fifth Disciple” by Peter Senge captures concepts of how to create a learning organization. Senge masterfully explains how people are stuck in a traditional way of thought and how it affects our decision making in business practices. The book also features a simulation experiment done with MIT students called, “The Beer Game.” The game results from show a repeated pattern of the points Senge is making about how we think similarly in terms of individuality and how it creates cycles in which we fail. From there, he explains his insights on how we can break these cycles from a traditional linear way of thinking to systems thinking which eventually ties in to create a better learning organization. As an engineering major, I felt this book did a very good job in tying a lot of concepts together that is practical in the major. The book also does a good job of highlighting where systems thinking is also practical in improving broader things like family, teams and organizations along with businesses. This book is definitely worth the read for anybody as it applies to everyday interactions. For anybody with management and business control positions, this book will definitely enlighten you on the benefits of operating under a learning organization especially if working in a supply chain industry.

The purpose of the Fifth Discipline is to turn corporations into learning organizations and to create learning environments for those that take part in these corporations. The author explains what the 5 disciplines are and describes the 7 learning disabilities that each of us will encounter and how to overcome them. The first discipline is personal mastery. By achieving this discipline we are able to see the results that matter most to us. The second discipline involves overcoming mental models. Mental models are ideas that are essentially ingrained into the way we think. The third discipline is building a shared vision. A shared vision is a common and genuine goal where people want to learn because they want to. The fourth discipline is team learning. Team learning is being able to enter a dialogue where ideas are shared openly and everyone is thinking together, not just a single person providing ideas and the rest of the group agrees as to not create conflict. The fifth discipline is systems thinking, the bonding agent meant to bring all the other disciplines together. This discipline is where people discover how they create their reality and how the can change it. We are then given an in depth description of the 5th discipline, systems thinking. Systems thinking is the idea that we are all part of a larger system, it wants us to view ourselves as part of nature and not just an observer separate from every other living thing. The author wants us to understand that our problems aren’t caused by some external source but instead caused by our own actions and our inability to find the root cause of our problems. He shows us how to identify naturally reoccurring patterns in nature, how people normally react to these patterns, and how to counteract the negative effects of these patterns by teaching us how to attain leverage on each type of pattern. Based on the lessons taught in this book I feel that these disciplines can be used in making effective changes in not only the workplace environment but in my community and in my personal life.

The area of Prolog programming is a highly specialized area of AI and computer science. The Visual Prolog software product is a sophisticated modern implementation of the Prolog paradigm and is highly useful in the development of specialized AI, Expert Systems, Ontological Engineering, and other knowledge dependent domains. I really appreciate the fact that Mr. Scott has written this book as it serves as a readable introduction to the language and has a solid start to finish example. It also has supplemental materials on the Visual Prolog website which are quite useful and illustrative. Several of us at the Naval Postgraduate School computer science department have copies of this book, and all agree that it is an excellent introductory book. As a PhD student and computer scientist/systems engineer of 23 years for the military, I am finding this book helpful in the area of my dissertation which combines AI, software engineering and aeronautics, as Visual prolog is one of the platforms that I am using.I recommend this book for all who are specifically using Visual Prolog or some other form of Prolog. I also recommend it for AI folks who are looking for a solid programming language to serve as a foundation for their algorithms. Thanks to Mr. Scott for his efforts to write this book, it is quite appreciated here in Monterey!

A good introduction to programming in Visual Prolog, but doesn't really address AI.

A nice little introduction to Visual Prolog, but not "about Artificial Intelligence" in any sense of the that phrase. It would be a worthwhile addition to the library of someone just learning Visual Prolog, but offers little to the intermediate to advanced practitioner of Visual Prolog.

I want to say how much I appreciated reading the book on Artificial Intelligence using Visual Prolog. After a day of intense reading, I found that the book complements very well the standard publications supported by Visual Prolog, namely the detailed insights on designing a Visual Prolog application.One of my goals is to translate Pro/3 from Visual Prolog 6.3 to Visual Prolog 7.3. I am struggling with the concepts of Vip7.3 but found the example application most revealing into the way an application could be reversed engineered.In short, thank you for a very good reading!

I own hundreds of books related to computer science or programming in general, I read about one a week on average and I have to admit this is the worst book I have read in a very long time.To start with, the layout is somewhat confusing with poor choices of fonts and orientation (you have to rotate the book to look at screenshots). It defies all convention and best practices with the source code being reproduced with a proportional font so that lines of the same length don't align making it very hard to read.The tone is somewhat patronizing with sentences like "don't do this until I tell you" but more importantly, the entire content of the book is exclusively geared toward explaining one sample program which choice is dubious to say the least: extracting the most frequent, least frequent, etc. numbers from 700 lottery draws.Not only that program could be written in less than 20 lines of code in any procedural language but it has nothing to do with "artificial intelligence" and the supposed strengths of Prolog.PS: next time I will be more careful about buying a book which only has two reviews, one of them being written by the author masquerading as a reader.

To knowingly kill their own countrymen, women, and children as collateral damage, for a greater cause, to stop the Germans from building an atomic weapon. It's easy to second guess the somewhat conflicted intelligence as to how far along Hitlers program was to achieving that goal before the Allies. But this was total war against a psychopath and his followers. Any credible intelligence indicating progress and certainly the Nazi's extraordinary interest in the heavy water at Vemork, had to be taken seriously. True heroes in every way, all of them, the resistance, the local supporters, and the British soldiers, even the American bomber crews who took part. Still bittersweet.

During the course of the second world war, both the United States and Germany were trying to develop an atomic bomb. After the Germans captured Norway, they set their sights on the heavy water plant located at Vemork. This plant was the only one in the world that produced heavy water. Professor Leif Tronstad was the designer of the plant. After the German invasion, he fled to Great Britain. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge about the plant and how to infiltrate it. Working with the British, a plan was formed using volunteers to break into the plant and sabotage the heavy water supply.Over the course of two years, many brave British and Norwegians worked to destroy Vemork's plant. One operation, involving British commandos, ended in disaster, while later, a team of Norwegian guerrillas managed to get inside.The efforts to destroy the plant at Vemork was one of the most high-priority efforts of the war. If the Germans managed to keep receiving supplies of heavy water, then the odds were good that they would have been able to build an atomic bomb. The efforts of the British, Norwegians, and the American Eighth Air Force were tasked to make sure this didn't happen."The Winter Fortress" offers an interesting view into the German pursuit of the atomic bomb. Author Neal Bascomb has done a very good job of describing how heavy water was so important to the German efforts as well as the urgency faced by the Allies to destroy the plant. He also describes how the Americans had begun their own atomic bomb program with the Manhattan project. The Vemork mission drastically altered the outcome of the war. Highly recommended.

I bought this book for my dad who is a World War II buff and a very discriminate reader. He prefers history books rather than novels. He said the book is very well researched and well written and gives it 5 stars!! This is the 2nd book he has read by Neal Bascomb, the first being Hunting Eichmann and he has become a huge fan. I just finished reading Hunting Eichmann and would have to agree that Mr Bascomb is a terrific storyteller and a great writer. I ordered another of his books, The Perfect Mile, which is now on it's way. This story is about the Nazi's discovery of "heavy water" produced in Norway, which could help produce an atom bomb. Absolutely riveting. I havent read the book yet but saw a 6 part miniseries on Netflix. My dad is sending the book to me and I cannot wait to read it. A fantastic true story but a supreme writer. A must read!

At the beginning of World War II both the Nazis and the Allies knew that an atomic bomb, if developed by one side or the other,, would quickly and decisively win the war for the first side to get it. With this knowledge, During the war years both sides raced ahead with their research. The Nazis' research was heavily dependent upon a substance called "heavy water." The only viable supply of the substance was a hydro-electric plant located in occupied Norway. The Allies wished to destroy or at least largely incapacitate this plant in order to slow down the Nazi research. The book recounts the various attempts made by the Allies to accomplish this. The attempts, as recounted in the book, were manned for the most part by Norwegian partisans who were trained in England and Scotland and then dropped by parachute into occupied Norway. The Nazis went to great lengths to catch and annihilate the saboteur-partisans as well as any local citizens who aided them in any way. As we all know, the Allies eventually won the race for the bomb, most probably with an assist provided by the efforts of the Norwegian partisans featured in the book. Had the Nazis, instead of the Allies, first developed the atomic bomb the subsequent history of the world would be very different. I found the book to be well-written and very suspenseful. Any World War II buff will be thrilled with it.

Simply astounding.The book reads much like a novel and includes all attempts to stop the production of heavy water for the Germans right up to the final assault which, after deciding to abandon Vemork as a production facility and move all of the heavy water to Germany, resulted in the sinking of the transport ferry to the bottom of one of Norway's deepest lakes.A fantastic story of the courage of the Norwegian resistance to thwart the Nazi war machine at every possible opportunity. A MUST for WWII history fans.

My book arrived this morning and I spent the day looking through it. I love all the information on papers, digital negatives and different formulas. It is written clearly making it very easy to follow whether you are a novice or expert making cyanotype prints. Enjoyable to read and wonderful to look through. I also enjoyed seeing all of the work by contemporary artists. Bravo Ms. Anderson!

Excellent information on papers and variations in Cyanotype chemistry. Excellent section on digital negatives. Detailed, readerable information, not a dry read but personable. Really enjoyed the section on contemporary working artists.

The author clearly knows her stuff, but if you're new to the cyanotype process, this book can be a little overwhelming, and maybe even disappointing. The supply list includes an expensive inkjet printer and UV exposure unit but doesn't include less-expensive alternatives for those starting out and/or unable to spend a couple thousand dollars on equipment. Also, while there's a lot of technical information, there isn't a lot of practical information about how to achieve some of the more creative techniques. As for the book itself, the font used for the detailed photo captions is difficult to read without eyestrain, and the index is far too general to offer much help.

Christina Z. Anderson's books on historic/alternative printing processes are unparalleled (her Gum Printing and Salt Print books are also fantastic). Not only is she a world expert in the processes that she documents, she also has learned from years of teaching students at Montana State University and collaborating with other expert printers worldwide. This helps her witness many beginner mistakes as well as many innovations and insights. Her writing style is informative and relatable in sharing that info.In my experience, cyanotype printing is rarely taken seriously as a photographic process (compared to salt prints, platinum prints, etc). It has a low barrier to entry (inexpensive and development can be simple), but it is challenging to master since prints and their density, contrast, color, and tonality are affected by many variables. Christina shares an unimaginable wealth of knowledge in this book, SUPPORTED BY ACTUAL TESTING (by multiple expert printers in multiple locations). Reading this book has enabled me to make measurable improvements in my prints and has saved me tons of money on paper. Other alt process book writers rely on anecdote or references to historic works to back up most of their procedure advice, but Christina's devotion to real-world testing is unique in the dozens of alt process books I've read over the years. She shares measurements she's made of over 100 papers with both Classic Cyanotype and Ware's New Cyanotype under different developing conditions, and she addresses paper humidity as a major source of repeatability issues. That is well know in Pt/Pd printing, but it was not widely discussed in the cyanotype world, in my experience (and is not relevant to all printing out processes).I cannot recommend this book any more highly. If you just want to make photograms, you don't NEED this book (but you might gain inspiration from the artist highlights in the 2nd half), but if you're interested in striving for quality photographic prints in prussian blue, then this is the only book you need. Some info on finessing the process was available scattered on forums in posts spanning the past ~15 years, but I've found all that info, plus extensive original research, concisely summarized in this book.If the Amazon paperback price is making you hesitate, check the publisher's website. They often have discounts.

I have never seen, in one book, such a complete evaluation of papers with many places to buy them and tremendously helpful descriptions; numerous variations on the blueprint formulae; and ways to use cyanotype with other historical processes. Plus, some of the reproductions of art work are inspirational.

Is it me or do all the reviews of this book sound fake??? Got this book and it isn't great. No pictures. Many typos: in 1 recipe it lists: "1 sliced" That's it. Not one recipe that I think I would actually try after having sleeve surgery... Disappointed. Sending back.

This cookbook is amazing! What I love about this is in the beginning of the book there is a guide for all the phases. It really helped me having a sample menu for each phase. Following that was an amazing assortment of cooking delights! I have cooked many things using the helpful tips in this book. I highly recommend this to anyone. On a side note I had friends and family use the same recipes who have not had the surgery and loved it.

About the Author

DEBORAH DRYDEN is a professor of theatre at the University of California at San Diego. She has designed costumes for many theatres across the country, including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and Portland, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the Minnesota Opera, the Mark Taper Forum, and the La Jolla Playhouse. She is also the costume designer for Malashock Dance and Company based in San Diego.In addition to designing costumes, Deborah has worked as a fabric dyer/painter at several theatres, including the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. She has conducted classes and workshops on fabric painting and dyeing throughout the United States and Canada.

This book is THE book for dyers, even just individual artists not working in theatre.Great trouble shooting guide and even just good to read as a refresher if you haven't done something in a while. I've been dyeing for almost 10 years and still refer to this book.

The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come by elsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textile paints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blue printing and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards than any other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid. Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textile paints, each on six different fibers. Good index.
