Christina Z. Anderson’s work focuses on the family snapshot and contemporary vanitas printed in a variety of 19th century photographic processes. Anderson’s work has shown internationally in 110+ shows and 40+ publications. She has authored books which have sold in 40 countries―The Experimental Photography Workbook, Gum Printing and Other Amazing Contact Printing Processes, Gum Printing, A Step by Step Manual Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice, and Salted Paper Printing, A Step-by-Step Manual Highlighting Contemporary Artists, along with Handcrafted: The Art and Practice of the Handmade Print (in Chinese) coauthored with Samuel Wang, S. My book arrived this morning and I spent the day looking through it. I love all the information on papers, digital negatives and different formulas. It is written clearly making it very easy to follow whether you are a novice or expert making cyanotype prints. Enjoyable to read and wonderful to look through. I also enjoyed seeing all of the work by contemporary artists. Bravo Ms. Anderson!
Excellent information on papers and variations in Cyanotype chemistry. Excellent section on digital negatives. Detailed, readerable information, not a dry read but personable. Really enjoyed the section on contemporary working artists.
The author clearly knows her stuff, but if you're new to the cyanotype process, this book can be a little overwhelming, and maybe even disappointing. The supply list includes an expensive inkjet printer and UV exposure unit but doesn't include less-expensive alternatives for those starting out and/or unable to spend a couple thousand dollars on equipment. Also, while there's a lot of technical information, there isn't a lot of practical information about how to achieve some of the more creative techniques. As for the book itself, the font used for the detailed photo captions is difficult to read without eyestrain, and the index is far too general to offer much help.
Christina Z. Anderson's books on historic/alternative printing processes are unparalleled (her Gum Printing and Salt Print books are also fantastic). Not only is she a world expert in the processes that she documents, she also has learned from years of teaching students at Montana State University and collaborating with other expert printers worldwide. This helps her witness many beginner mistakes as well as many innovations and insights. Her writing style is informative and relatable in sharing that info.In my experience, cyanotype printing is rarely taken seriously as a photographic process (compared to salt prints, platinum prints, etc). It has a low barrier to entry (inexpensive and development can be simple), but it is challenging to master since prints and their density, contrast, color, and tonality are affected by many variables. Christina shares an unimaginable wealth of knowledge in this book, SUPPORTED BY ACTUAL TESTING (by multiple expert printers in multiple locations). Reading this book has enabled me to make measurable improvements in my prints and has saved me tons of money on paper. Other alt process book writers rely on anecdote or references to historic works to back up most of their procedure advice, but Christina's devotion to real-world testing is unique in the dozens of alt process books I've read over the years. She shares measurements she's made of over 100 papers with both Classic Cyanotype and Ware's New Cyanotype under different developing conditions, and she addresses paper humidity as a major source of repeatability issues. That is well know in Pt/Pd printing, but it was not widely discussed in the cyanotype world, in my experience (and is not relevant to all printing out processes).I cannot recommend this book any more highly. If you just want to make photograms, you don't NEED this book (but you might gain inspiration from the artist highlights in the 2nd half), but if you're interested in striving for quality photographic prints in prussian blue, then this is the only book you need. Some info on finessing the process was available scattered on forums in posts spanning the past ~15 years, but I've found all that info, plus extensive original research, concisely summarized in this book.If the Amazon paperback price is making you hesitate, check the publisher's website. They often have discounts.
I have never seen, in one book, such a complete evaluation of papers with many places to buy them and tremendously helpful descriptions; numerous variations on the blueprint formulae; and ways to use cyanotype with other historical processes. Plus, some of the reproductions of art work are inspirational.
