From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—An in-depth look at dinosaurs, geography, and evolution, presented through an appealing framing device. After Ronnie fails her dinosaur quiz, she travels back in time with her neighbor Miss Lernin, a paleontologist, for a firsthand lesson. The two visit four different time periods: the late Triassic, the late Jurassic, the "early-ish, almost middle Cretaceous," and the late Cretaceous. Miss Lernin educates Ronnie on the geography, climate, vegetation, and animal life of each era. Howard details characteristics of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, covers similarities and differences among different species, and offers information on evolution, convergent evolution, and mutations. Names of species are in bold print and accompanied by a phonetic pronunciation. The simple, cartoon-style color illustrations are detailed enough to indicate differences among species. The conversation between Miss Lernin and Ronnie is fairly easy to follow, but the inclusion of a calendar between different eras to indicate the passing of time may be confusing, as each "day" represents millions of years. The last few pages include "Cool Animals from Other Times" and a drawing of a scientific family tree. VERDICT A great addition to graphic novel or dinosaur collections.—Tamara Saarinen, Pierce County Library, WA

Review
"Howard details characteristics of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, covers similarities and differences among different species, and offers information on evolution, convergent evolution, and mutations...a great edition to graphic novel or dinosaur collections." (School Library Journal)**STARRED REVIEW** "An information-dense but fast-moving exploration of how scientists have come to understand life in that period (dinosaurs, as well as mammals, insects, and sea life), clearly and amusingly explained through the duo’s dialogue." (Publishers Weekly)"This is more a creative presentation of facts than a true adventure story, although there are plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes buried in the energetic, sometimes frenzied illustrations...It’s an effective way of putting the vast history of the world before humans in perspective; dinosaur nuts (and there are many) will eat it up." I've been reading this book at bedtime to my 5-year-old. Every night before bedtime she says "more dinosaurs please!" or "Mama, it's time for dinosaurs!" I really appreciate how much careful effort Ms. Howard has put in to expressing complex scientific topics in a way that kids can "get" it. We'll have to read it many more times before my kiddo really understands things, but it has been AMAZING to watch her learn -- to see the dawning of understanding on her face as she realizes how long dinosaurs roamed the earth and how short human history is, for example. It's an inspiring experience as a parent. But I've also thoroughly enjoyed updating my own knowledge about dinosaurs -- there's a lot scientists have learned about the history of dinosaurs on earth since I was a kid. (There's way more to learn than just about the whole "feathers" thing.) The illustrations are beautiful and engaging, while the text and character expressions include quick twists of humor that carry the story along. Love the whole package!
This is a really fun, clever, informative book about dinosaurs and evolution. Howard is witty and informative and the illustrations are charming-- she injects a lot of personality into her depictions of dinosaurs, pterasaurs, etc. She's obviously very passionate about the subject, and extremely well informed. One thing I really appreciated about the book is the approach to explaining evolution. My child has had a hard time understanding just how long evolution takes, and how many steps are involved. But Howard presents the information very clearly. She explains all of the concepts clearly, in fact, presenting the word (including pronunciation if needed) and definition and then referring to it later as a review that doesn't feel like a review.Another fantastic thing about the book is that Howard discusses how what we "know" about dinosaurs, and other things, changes a lot based on new evidence scientists find. She talks about the way knowledge changes and that scientists don't always agree on things and sometimes just plain don't KNOW things. It's very refreshing. There's a lot of information in here, but it doesn't feel overly educational. It's very fun and the facts bloom nicely, fertilized by Howard's enthusiasm for the subject. One final thing I enjoy: Howard explains why Miss Lernin and Ronnie are able to travel through time, fly, breathe underwater, and not get eaten by dinosaurs as being... science magic. Maybe you've wondered how The Magic Schoolbus works. Probably the same science magic. It's great to get a kind of wink and nod to how improbable the whole time travel etc thing is. It's just magic. Science magic.I have an 8 year old and I'm looking forward to share this with him. I bought the e-version for Kindle Fire.
Abby Howard captures the imagination of the young and old with her latest tome Dinosaur Empire. Through her wonderful artwork and clever storyline she covers the Mesozoic Era in a unique way. This girl sure knows her dinosaurs and the reader gets quite an education amidst the entertaining and beautifully drawn images and well-written text. It reminds me of The Magic Schoolbus and I'm sure Miss Frizzle is proud. I highly recommend this book for children of all ages.
I bought this on a whim, after seeing it advertised on Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. I was not disappointed! Not only are the latest finds presented, such as the protofeathers of ancient dinosaurs, but the diversity of the ecosystems is also explored! The book also notes many times that a lot of the information we have now is subject to guesswork and may change as new fossils are discovered, which is an important thing to remember in such a field. The book also arrived on time and in good condition.
I am going to add mine to the pile of already glowing reviews. I received this book and tore through it! The book covers evolution, ecosystems, paleontology, the process of science, and much more and makes it memorable and easy to comprehend. Yet it is still high level and in no way talks down to its audience - adults and children alike will enjoy it! It is an up-to-date book on dinosaurs (did you know they have feathers now?) and also introduces you to a menagerie of amazing animals, plants and other from our planet's past. You might find yourself trawling the web to learn even more information on your favorite critters that you never knew existed! After finishing the series (as it is so far), I felt such a glow of amazement and wonder that I immediately got copies for all of my nieces and nephews. Thanks Abby!
I'm not sure whether the actual T-Rex had feathers or not, but minus definitive proof, I prefer not seeing a fuzzy T-Rex, and I think most kids feel the same. T-Rex is generally kids' favorite dinosaur bar none, and it's kind of a slap in the face to show a greatly re-interpreted version of it, based on sketchy knowledge. Otherwise, this book does have some good thing in it, but you'll have to put up with its particular revisionist interpretations.
Simply an amazing book. Top notch illustrations that are both highly accurate to modern scientific theory and gorgeous... and more importantly seductive for their favored prey. I mean audience. I mean children.I'm deeply impressed. I think this book is my new gold standard for packaging an amazing amount of detail and scientific concepts in an incredibly approachable and kid-engrossing book. My six-year old loves it and consistently chooses to read this book over the usual boy-fascinations. The soft introduction and clean repetition of concepts meshed with the lush illustrations and fun characters make this book a huge win both for fun and learning. Encore, encore!
This book is amazing! The visuals are clear and colorful, the information is understandable and absolutely absorbing, and the writing is charming and unique. I've always wanted to learn more about dinosaurs and this book is definitely the place to do that. This has definitely become my go-to method of cheering up when I'm feeling down.
