Richard P. McBrien is Crowley-O'Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Educated at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he has also served as president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. Though some seem to consider father McBrien almost heretical, I could not find any proof that he diverges from the main teachings of the church. If you're looking for blinkered uncritical adoration of all things Catholic, this is not the book for you. If you want a thoughtful explanation of church history and doctrine than this is an excellent book.
