I haven’t lived through that time, but I can easily imagine such discrimination against women.Unfortunately, injustice and mistreatment still inflicts the women of Saudi Arabia in our day. Princess Sultana’s childhood brought back to me memories of my own childhood when my father preferred my brothers to us (his daughters) by giving them more freedom, love, toys and sometimes more food. To this day, generally speaking, men are granted full freedom and control over their lives while women are restricted to the home. Their way out of the house can only be achieved either through lucky marriage or strenuous education and personal strength coupled with ample leniency from their male guardians.Education, however, helped change Saudi men’s views on women. A growing number of Saudi fathers nowadays carry so much pride in being named after their first born daughter, refuse to let their daughters undergo FGM, insist on their daughters education, brag about sending their daughters abroad to finish their degrees, and strive to find the best husbands for their daughters.It is true that education has made tremendous positive changes to the lives of women in my country, but unfortunately little has been achieved legally for women. A man can still decide whether or not his daughters go to school, work or marry the men of their own choosing. The law does not protect women in many cases and the happiness of women here is down to the level of goodness of their male guardians.The narrator, nonetheless, fails sometimes to give a true picture of Saudi Arabia. Her stories appear to be either true to her region or class and carries less truth for other regions, classes or tribes. For example, labeling all Saudis as rich, claiming that alcohol has easy access to a Saudi home, or considering the announcement of engagement and weddings extremely private matters. Her narration at other times can only be considered authentic for her time, for the book cites so many almost dead practices such as women and men of no relations to one anther not being allowed in the same car, marrying young girls to old men, protecting babies from evil eye by pinning blue beads to their clothing, or celebrating the virginity of a new wife.As I read the book, I couldn’t help stop crying with every chapter. Some of the princess’s reflections reminded of a long gone childhood and her anger has reawaken suppressed feelings inside me. I felt that the years of submissiveness and helplessness have washed away my anger and ability to see the injustices of our situation. The first few chapters made me boil with anger, but as I kept reading and reflecting on our lives, my feelings changed to optimism. I am extremely grateful to the women who lived before me. Through their struggle, they helped pave the way for the women of my generation. I know too that women of future generations will reap the benefits of my generation’s struggle.

I know something of the world, but I had no idea....zero idea....of the extent of subjugation of women in Saudi Arabia as described in this book. I kept putting it down, not because I didn't like it, but because the misogynistic society described within its pages was so overwhelming. Why do the men of the middle east have to dominate women to this extent? There is great evil in this kind of cruelty towards the female gender. They are afraid of women. Why? I don't know whether to recommend this book or not. It was interesting, but shocking and upsetting. I came away from it angry, very angry.

This is so well written, so revealing and so believable that I don't even care how much is nonfiction. For those who have difficulty believing it, you may need to get out more - or just read more. Seriously! I taught Muslims in the US and went to graduate school with Kuwaiti men and women. I have friends who were nurses in Saudi Arabia. My husband spent time in Bahrain awaiting the start of the second Iraqi war before going in and nothing here seems unbelievable to us. In fact, it's not even surprising.

Seriously couldn't out this book down. To be fair, it is a very easy read, big font and 240-ish pages, which go by very fast. It is harrowing though, dont read if you expect to be titillated, you will just be horrified. But in an eye opening way.At first I wasn't sure if this was real or not. But after finishing it, I'm certain it is. I heard objections that it was too "sensational", which i find to be very disconcerting. If you find it hard to bevie that women are being treated like this, then you really need to get out more.

This book was well written and I found I wanted to read the entire trilogy as the books were insightful into the plight of women in the Muslim culture, insight into how excessive wealth can affect behavior and abuse by Muslims outside of their own culture as well. It deserves 4-stars but readers will find it disturbing on how females are valued and treated in the Muslim culture and there are many examples in which the abuse is truly criminal. This continues to haunt me and I believe it is very important that the world know and understand the plight of women in many of the Muslim cultures. Both the individual within Saudi Arabia and Jean Sasson put their lives at risk to inform the world as to the plight of women in the Muslim culture which is so courageous. This abuse as it is so foreign to any culture that I have experienced and I cannot fathom that slavery, devaluation and abuse of females still exists in this century. It is truly medieval and needs to be addressed by the world now, not later.

To summarize it, this book is a waste of money.First of all, this book is full of fluff with a lot of extraneous matter, especially if you are pressed for time and the PSAT is nearing. We were only interested in practicing the Verbal (Reading+Writing) sections for my son. The verbal questions have quite a few errors, and the writing section which is supposed to be grammar asks for the main idea of the passage - i.e. it is structured like the reading test. My son, even while taking the test remarked that many of the questions are ambiguous or poorly framed got 4 wrong on the reading section, and 10 wrong on the writing test #2. For comparison, he has scored near perfect on both the math and Verbal sections according to the official college board sample PSAT test + the other tests on Khan academy.Also really annoying and disappointing is that only one test is included in the book. To take the second online test, you have to register online and disclose a lot of personal information about your child including contact information, which I supposed will be used for marketing Kaplan's other services like coaching classes..The Barron's guide is better than this book, but the PSAT book from Ivy-Global with 3 sample tests proved to have the most accurate sample tests compared to the official tests from college board/Khan academy.

I am a math tutor in Staten Island, NY, and have been for 35 years. I bought two copies of this book: one for an SAT student of mine and one for myself. The math sections are terrible. There are questions that are poorly worded, so that there is no way to know what the author meant. In these cases I had to look at the answer in order to know what the question really was. This is not helpful for a student working on his/her own. There are other questions that are written correctly, and have beautifully written explanations, BUT THAT ARE INCORRECT! They are answers and explanations for similar problems, but not for the one asked. It got to the point where I couldn't get through even one lesson without losing significant time to these kinds of errors. I had to stop using the book. I have had these problems with Kaplan books for over ten years, and I am now giving up on them. I will not waste my time and money, nor the time and money of my students, on any more Kaplan books. You would think that a company that prints many tens of thousands (I'm guessing) of the same test prep book that is sold all over the country, this year and for the next few years, and I assume makes good money doing so, would want to publish one with good material. I guarantee you that the math sections in this book were not edited by anyone with a masters or Ph.D. in mathematics. It is clear to me after all these years of dealing with this same problem with their SAT prep books, as well as with their h.s. entrance books, that Kaplan doesn't care about the content of their books, their reputation, or the students they are hurting with faulty questions, and wrong answers and explanations. In contrast, I have never found even one error in any College Board book. If there is a mistake or two in a book, I can note them and still use the book; however, the Kaplan books I've used are so riddled with mistakes that they are not good learning tools. It makes me sad to think how many students working on their own with Kaplan prep books have spent their time only to be confused and taught the wrong thing. Kaplan is putting the growth of their bottom line above helping the students who buy their books, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

The only reason I am giving this review two stars is because it attempts to help prepare an incoming 11th grader for the PSAT.First off, I noticed a good amount of questions have errors in them including wrong numbering of the lines in the reading section and repeating the same answer choice for letter choices.Also, pertaining to the reading section, there are comparatively difficult words that the book expects you to know, yet the College Board had specifically said that the words would be challenging, but simple enough that the meaning can be determined by the context. However, in the PSAT there is no context when the difficult vocabulary is in the answer choices.The answer explanations in the back of the book are very broad and do not explain why certain answers aren't correct even if they seem to be. This is not as much needed for the math section, but is vital for the reading and writing sections. Some answers are phrased "C summarizes the main idea of the passage" and doesn't even explain what that main idea is.The math content in the book is okay. The questions seem adequate, but the Kaplan Strategy they tell you to do everytime is very contradicting, because they also tell you to spend the smallest amount of time as you can. However, the Kaplan strategy can easily take 2-4 minutes for a question that should only take 1.The grammar section of the book is okay, and explains a good amount of grammatical functions like usage and punctuation as well as misused words.The practice in the book is good enough, but I would highly recommend using the Collegeboard New SAT book to help prepare as it is made by the people who also produce the test and this year, the new SAT coming in March is very similar to the new PSAT. I hope this helped!

Book is excellent and the one practice test in the book is fabulous. Comes with detail explanations. However the online test doesn't exist. It's a ploy to get you to sign up for their online tutoring. I went through several pages of "registering" my book only to discover the resource "is no longer available." Very disappointing.

Used to study for the PSAT 2015. My son had no complaints about it. I guess we'll see when the scores come in but he seemed to have an easy time of it.

My son used this as preparation for the PSAT with an online class. He seemed to do well on the test and was in good spirits upon completion.

The questions in this book are poorly written. Many explanations are vague and irrelevant. This is a rushed publication the make a quick buck. The Kaplan SAT prep books in the years before this one were much better quality.

A total waste of a comic to read didn't hold my interest an it was dull to read this comic.

Decided to get the whole volume after the first to episodes I brought because It was such an awesome story line...

I ordered this because I am, or rather, WAS a fan of Jonathan Mayberry. This is a comic book. I thought it was a book series. I am mad and canceled my other Jonathan Mayberry purchase. Never again.

'V-Wars' gets the graphic novel treatment. For those not familiar with the series, they are are linked stories about a virus named ICE that turns people into vampires and a series of linked characters that show up in some of the stories. Based on genetics, people can be turned into a variety of vampires based on their bloodline.Professor Swann is a main character of the series, and this book gives some background on him that I didn't know. He is at the forefront of trying to understand and find a way for the vampires (bloods) to live peaceably with the humans (beats). He is embedded in a military unit that is at the front of what seems to be a vampire war. There are groups of people trying to push war to the forefront, and as hard as Swann tries, his words seem to be more and more futile. It all culminates in a confrontation that will leave Swann with some choices to make.It was an okay story, but I think I prefer the prose versions over this graphic novel version. I felt like the art was a bit weak, and the story seemed a bit overly long. Most of the V-Wars stories I've read have been more concise and punchy. Still it's interesting to see this in a graphic novel and for Swann to take center stage.I was given a review copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I enjoyed it fairly well considering I had my fair share of war and frankly I tire of it.The characters were interesting, a little flat but we're focusing on the war so building the characters will go a little slower, they were trying to do what they felt was right in a time where they had even less power than a human would usually have.I like the fact that we have actual monsters in this war. We have something, vampires, that people have throughout history considered villainous towards humanity. But what now that they are simply people infected with a virus? What now that the human genome is being altered by sickness and is resulting in these people with powers and strange appearances, not all, but a good many?I feel that by utilizing the fact that humans become monsters and it is these differences that terrify those in power into action, or at times gives those in power a way to engage in violence against a specific group of people because there is already great unrest, and by drumming up more unrest so they sneak by undetected to do whatever it is their queasy, black hearts desire.Most want peace, nearly everyone wants peace, no one wants a war on home front, it takes decades to recoup from that. While there are extremists on any side of anything, political or religious [sometimes sports], they are relatively small in number compared to the entire population, and when we let extremists strike fear into the majority we get issues like blaming a whole population or culture for the actions of a few.By showing an incredibly gray viewpoint, and I mean smack dab in the middle gray, not vaguely stating that group A or group B is possibly gunna turn into the good guys, gives a much truer voice to what war really feels like. And I feel that is how war should be looked at, very rarely are there' fully good or fully bad guys on just one side. Even if the "good guys" come and help there's still the chance that they're only helping to gain something besides peace out of this.The plot flows fairly well, as a comic there's very few lulls, and even then they are short, the premise is interesting and it really makes you think about who really are the monsters in the battles.

WOW! Just WOW!I've been trying to learn how to make good bread at home for a while, and have baked many loaves (about 3 5lb bags of flour worth), and have never been satisfied with the results, following directions and methods found elsewhere.My very first attempt at Richard's methods has produced wonderful results! The dough is kneaded sufficiently in just a few minutes, has much better gluten development (without adding Vital Wheat Gluten), rises better... just better in every way than my previous attempts.The included video is short, and I would say barely sufficient, but extremely helpful. No book can adequately describe the kneading method, and watching him do it on the video explains everything. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words after all.If you want to make some good bread, get this book!

Five simple doughs with lots of variations, and step by step instructions for french-style kneading with high-hydration doughs., Lots of luscious photos to whet your appetite. This is an excellent book for the beginning baker, or for an experienced baker who wants to experiment with adding flavors and new shapes to her repertoire. First thing I tried was the fougasse, because it's just so much fun, and it came out perfectly -light and chewy with a great crust. Comes with a CD showing Bertinet's kneading and shaping techniques, which is a nice bonus, even though most of it's available on YouTube. The only problem (I have the paperback edition) is the little round rubber thing that's supposed to hold the enclosed CD on the front cover. It's just not efficient and the CD kept falling off, so I had to file it separately from the book. a minor inconvenience.

I have this book and "Crust" also by Bertinet and together they offer a somewhat unique, but effective, teaching method for making homemade breads. "Dough", the first book, is the one being reviewed but my comments also apply to "Crust" as the two books are essentially volume 1 & 2 of a bread making course.Bertinet hails from Brittany and his northern French upbringing is evident throughout. He makes bread the way it's made in small French villages where the English influence predominates. The included short DVD's guide the reader through the basic mixing and kneading process that is somewhat different from the typical method employed in most bread books. Is it better? I don't think so, but it is another way of achieving the desired result and his demonstrations take place in a home (albeit, well equipped) kitchen rather than a commercial bakery or video production set so it's very reassuring to the novice.The recipes themselves are good, but not great. And, like just about all bread making books they include a large percentage of breads that you probably won't ever make. I mean, let's face it, most home bakers want to make VERY GOOD baguettes/round loaves, a sourdough or two, good rye, some Italian loaves and a good pizza dough. Bertinet includes these along with numerous other breads and shapes, but then so does just about every other bread book out there. What makes these books valuable is the visual hands on experience one gets from the DVD's.If you've never made bread (successfully) before these books would be a very good instructional tool and (with the included DVD's) worth the $50 they will run you. If you're a little more experienced I would HIGHLY recommend Maggie Glezer's "Artisan Baking". It's only available in paperback and there's no DVD's, but the content and photography is excellent. I would also recommend the chapter on bread in Julia Child's "The Way to Cook" as a excellent introduction to "french bread" making. It's also probably the best all around cook book you can buy.

This book and the DVD that comes with it show you how to make absolutely great bread at home without any fancy equipment or appliances. What you do need is good natural flour, yeast, salt and water and some inexpensive simple kitchen equipment. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that this version uses the rather archaic avoirdupois system of ounces & pounds, and teaspoons & tablespoons -- while at the same time telling you to be accurate in your measurements. It even uses Fahrenheit temperatures [though some recipes give the conversion to Celsius. I still recommend it highly.

This book/DVD combination is an accessible introduction to artisan bread baking. In my opinion, the DVD alone is worth the price of the book/DVD together. There are more complex books that delve into preferments, retarded fermentation and sourdough, but this is a simple introduction that will inspire bakers to fire up the oven.The book is broken into five sections, each dealing with a different dough formula: white (that's white as in French baguette, not Wonder Bread), olive, brown, rye and sweet doughs. I have made a few of the formulas and they are simple, sound and delicious. Small chapters also deal with ingredients, technique and loaf shaping. All in all, the book is solid and informative, as well as inspirational. It makes you want to bake.The bonus DVD that's included shows Richard Bertinet working a batch of white (French) dough. Now whether you REALLY have to smack the dough on the counter is debatable, but the joy that Richard derives from working the dough is certain. The real gem is the forming of the dough into baguettes and rolls. Loaf forming is nearly impossible to learn from a book. The only way to catch on is by standing next to a master at work, but a close second is watching a master do it on video (this DVD). The only other DVD I have seen that deals with detailed loaf shaping is from King Arthur Flour (also recommended highly).If you do pick up this book and have people over for dinner, make a few of the fougasses (the leafy looking loaf on the cover of the book)!!! On the DVD, Richard provides the details on how to form them. They are simple to make (once you have the dough made), wonderful to eat, and will get you raves from your guests. Trust me on this one.

About the Author

Ayelet Gundar-Goshen was born in Israel in 1982 and holds an MA in clinical psychology from Tel Aviv University. She has worked for the Israeli civil rights movement, and is an award-winning screenwriter. She won Israel's prestigious Sapir Prize for best debut. Waking Lions, her first novel published in the U.S., has been translated into nine languages.

After completing over a nineteen hour shift at the Soroka Hospital in Beersheva, Eitan Green, an arrogant, brilliant neurosurgeon, speeds on a desert road and accidentally hits an Eritrean man. Green, in shock , gets out of his red SUV and performs a quick clinical check on the victim: with a crushed skull leaking spinal fluid, nothing can save him. The surgeon gets back into his vehicle and drives home. The next morning, while Liat, the surgeon's wife, a crack Israeli detective, leans over the Eritrean's corpse, still lying in the road, and tries to reconstruct the accident scene to catch the hit-and-run driver, her husband answers the door of their home. There. a statuesque, Eritrean woman, the victim's wife, silently hands him the wallet Eitan dropped at the crime scene. She speaks Hebrew and orders him to meet her at 10 PM in an abandoned garage near the accident site. With heart pounding intensity, the reader gets sucked into a story of tenderness and violence, love and lust, deceit and trust, economic disparity and racial intolerance. Amazingly, this work is Gundar-Goshen's debut novel and it is masterfully written!

A very thoughtful story dealing with some of the most difficult questions that a country and an individual can face.What do you do when you instinctively make a decision that is wrong and against your personal ethics?How do countries deal with the refugee crisis?How does a person view "the other"? What will a person do to protect his family?The protagonist is faced with overwhelming moral issues which are thoughtfully examined . Yet the tone of the book is not preachy.This is one of those books that you will think about for a long time after you have read it.

The book drags, becomes tedious. It hooks you fast, which is great. Tension builds immediately. It’s a gripper early on. But mid-way the grip starts to weaken progressively. It fails to address its big themes of race/class without losing its suspenseful velocity. The principal scenario/predicament drags endlessly—you’re like, “C’mon, I get it. Now take this somewhere interesting before my ADHD REALLY kicks in.” I was glad to read it, but impatient to end it.

Such a thoughtful tale, and timely in this international world of ours. The outcome could have gone to other conclusions, you will keep in suspense until the end. Highly recommended.

I didn't have to read more than a few pages into this book to realize it was graced by artful use of language and, I assume, an excellent translation into English along with an intriguing plot premise that promised a story fraught with moral dilemmas. When I'm in the mood for serious fiction, this is the sort of novel that I typically would find enjoyable. But a few pages more into the book I realized it was hobbled by a narrative that unfolded at a glacial pace and by page after page after page of interior monologues by the three not particularly sympathetic main characters. About one third of the way into the book, I began to skim. Two thirds of the way in, the tedium became unbearable and I gave up on it altogether.

I loved the ethical tug-of-war that the protagonist, Eitan Green, struggles with in the story: his love for his family, his sexual attraction to an Eritrean woman refugee who has him blackmailed over the hit-and-run accident that killed her abusive husband, his wish to save his career, and his heroic work to give medical treatment to Israel's black refugees in the desert. After his initial moral failure - running away from the man he has fatally injured, he gives himself over to working distractedly at his day job in a Beersheva hospital, and running an illegal clinic for desperate refugees in the Negev. His family never sees him awake, and his wife who is a detective, sets out to find the murderer of the man found in the desert.The narrative is tautly written, the ins and outs of the story kept me glued to it. Eventually Eitan's boss at the hospital and the alluring Eritrean woman prove to have moral flaws, as we all do.The timeliness of this story, as the State of Israel pursues a plan to extradite it's African refugees is right on target. I hope to read more of this author's work soon. If this is a thriller, it has what most books in this genre lack: a heart.

The book contained too much and repetitive inner dialogue, description of thought processes and feelings, without really adding to the character, and so it became boring hat way. I found myself skipping these parts after a while. Story was fairly good. Somewhat underdeveloped conclusion of the story, may be to be a "surprise", but it seemed a bit like the author was getting tired of her own story. It has given some good insight into Israeli society and its injustices, which was the only feature I would say I really appreciated about the book.

Pilfering medications and medical supplies on a frequent basis in a 2014 medical facility sets up all sorts of red flags with associates at work after the second or third instance. Investigator wife is not very strong in her skills finding the perpetrator of the Eritrean’s demise nor where her husband is every night. The story has bursts of energy and then drags off in random descriptive trails that serve little purpose. I have concluded this book and have no idea if Eitan went back to his wife, if she dumped him, if the police ever concluded who killed the Eritrean......not worth your time, even for a beach book.
