I received an A in the class and while the book was great preparation for the Algebra involved in Calc, it wasn’t particularly great with Trigonometry and very rarely foreshadowed the upcoming topics of Calculus.Details:I don’t recall the book covering the Double-Angle Formulas, which was a critical component of evaluating Integrals involving Trigonometric Functions, especially semi-circle and Trig Substitution. I also wish the book emphasized the importance of Trig, beyond just the title, and actually how useful memorizing will become. Furthermore, it would have been nice had they mentioned various memorization strategies for Identities and the Trig Ratios. I certainly recommend you Google the Trig Identitiy Hexagon and the Trig Ratio Hand trick. I would have had more appreciation for the topics in this book if they had done some foreshadowing of the upcoming topics in Calculus.

The item arrived overall in very good shape. The cover was somewhat discolored and had a few scratches, but the physical pages were perfect. As for the quality of the textbook material, this is the best textbook I have read for covering the necessary math needed for higher level mathematics. The information in this book is even slightly more detailed than what is present in the Precalculus edition, but it is, of course, missing the introduction to limit theory which can always be covered later in an actual Calculus textbook. The information is thorough and concise, and for this reason, if you are someone who likes to study privately and learn by yourself, this is an excellent textbook to get started with.

I ended up dropping this class half way through the semester because it wouldn’t work with my degree (and the teacher was a b) but the book came quick, was in good (but used) condition, it’s interesting and fairly helpful. I’m keeping this book for future use cause it’s fully self sustaining and you can learn from that rather then just use it for prep questions. Btw, almost NO difference between the 8th, 9th and 10th ed. so buy the cheapest one lol.

This book is the best of its kind. But turning back and forth to the answers is a hassle. Some questions have answers, some don't. It's pretty awkward to use as a teacher. I bought the solution book to help out. Same issue some problems have answers and some do not. IT's good for the curriculum though and great for the price (used) plus theres an online version and test question banks available. That is what got me to this book in the first place.

The book itself: This textbook is extremely popular for the breadth and depth of algebra and trig that it covers. This is no dummies book; it's a book written like everyone is a math major, and that's one of the reasons math professors love it. However, its hard core math-for-mathematicians focus makes it a tough textbook experience for some students to wrap their heads around the material. If you 're a math novice, mathphobic, haven't taken math in a long time, or if you didn't take (and pass) AP algebra, trig or even calculus in high school, then you will struggle with any class that uses this textbook. Sullivan does not simplify things. He expects you to know what you're doing, and you'd better be able to run with him or learn to to run, else you'll get left behind with this textbook. If you're sketchy with math and have no choice about using this book, then expect to spend time with a tutor. A lot of time. If you're wanting a more user-friendly experience with math this advanced, definitely look for a professor/college that uses the Blitzer Precalculus textbook. If you're wanting to fly with math, then Sullivan is your book.A la carte vs hardcover: Some people don't like a la carte texts. Of course, hardcovers are more durable and thus have more resale value, but some of us have other considerations to make with a textbook. I'm disabled, so I need to keep my load as light as possible, so the a la carte textbooks definitely make my life easier. Even if I weren't disabled, I'd love the option of being able to bring only what I need with me, rather than an entire textbook. That's especially important in the case of this Sullivan textbook. It has over 1000 pages and the paper is slightly glossy, which adds to the weight. The a la carte version saves a ton of strain on shoulder, neck and back.To test out how much I'd hate carrying the hardback version, I borrowed a copy from the math department of my university (one of the perks of working there), to prep for my upcoming pre-calc class over the winter break. Thankfully, the farthest I carry it right now is from one corner of my desk to another, because the hardback is one bear of a heavy book. I'd kill myself if I had to lug it to and from class every day.Another good reason for having the a la carte book is that we're only using half of the book this semester. Why carry around material I don't need, for the half that I do? Seems like a no-brainer to me.10th edition vs. 9th: This is not a textbook update merely for the sake of making a few bucks, or staying ahead of torrents. I had the ninth edition, once upon a time, and I like this tenth much better. Pearson upped the quality of the paper and made the pages a brighter white, which makes them far easier to read. The images pop from the page now, and they didn't do that before. The paper itself is sturdier than the previous version, making it less prone to wrinkling and ripping than with the 9th edition. Oddly, by improving the paper quality, they made the book lighter than it was before, and that's definitely a bonus. The improvements of the physical book itself are all for the better.The differences in material covered between this version and the ninth aren't all that dramatic, but they're definitely not absent. Some of the figures have been moved around or redone, and some of the problem set questions have been re-worked. Some errors in the solutions have also been cleared up. Sullivan is also a lot clearer when he's using proofs to explain concepts than he was before, and that's a huge help. I know that his explanations of the concepts underlying the material bores the STEM majors who only need to get through their required math classes, but, for math majors like me, those proofs are a good intro to what we'll see after calculus. He strips that process down a lot, but it's still a decent "getting the feet wet" intro to proofs.You'll definitely want to get the solution manual to go with this book, math major or not. Sullivan has a habit of skipping over steps/ideas that make the concepts make more sense, and the solution manual tends to address those omissions.Overall, I'm very pleased with this update. It addresses a lot of the nits I picked with the ninth edition, which was such a terrible textbook that it scared me away from taking classes that used it. Now I'm confident I can not only grasp the material in this book, but that I'll succeed with it, too.

I used this book for my Fall 2015 class. It came with the access card needed for class. The book was just and updated version of previous versions with some math problems changed and format changes. I still had to use youtube and other resources to help me solve problems the even problems that did not have example of how to solve in the textbook.

Was used, so I was expecting some damage, but it was more than I thought. Still not bad but it got annoying sometimes because the pages were messed up.

Very boring, but it teaches math and the class requires either this or the newer one. With this being much cheaper I'm happy to sacrifice the newness of it

The latest in the Monster Manual series, the fourth (or fifth, if you count the Fiend Folio) is a departure from the classic listings of the previous books. The book includes a number of new monsters, as one would expect.For each monster, the book includes a number of additional features. Sample encounters and lairs provide a quickly inserted monster feature, and each monster also includes a block of Lore, so that GMs can provide PCs relevant info without spoiling too much. The monster stats are provided in the New encounter-based layout, rather than the format used in the previous books.Unfortunately, the additional material means there are far less monsters in this tome as compared to the other ones. To make matters worse, a number of familiar monsters - mostly humanoid races - are revisited, providing several advanced versions to such favorites as Drow, Githyanki, Orcs and Gnolls. This drops the effective monster count even further.Any experienced GM can either create such advanced monsters themselves, or have a library of useful references to help (such as Dungeon magazine). The sample lairs are likewise only really useful for one encounter (per gaming group), and then you're in reruns. Do we REALLY need more sample drow encounters and foes?The new stat blocks are also cumbersome, and I prefer the original ones. Granted, the new ones are designed to ease encounters. But there is something to be said for consistency, and I would rather see the encounter-based stat blocks for encounters only, and the original stat blocks for the monster listings.The lore blocks are a nice touch. It would be nice if WotC provided stat blocks for all previous Monster Manual critters. However, the difficulties for the stat blocks are based upon the monster's CR, not their relative rarity. So a PC would have more knowledge of the Clockwork Mender (a new CR 1/2 monster that's from Mechanus) than a common troll or ogre.As far as the monsters themselves go, we have a horde of new dragonspawn from Tiamat. These are interesting, but only really useful in a dragon-based campaign. There are a few new clockwork creatures, demons, and yugoloths, and some interesting new creatures such as the Zern. And of course there are the Skiurid - evil dark squirrels.While the sample encounters and advanced (classed) humanoids are a nice body of work, they do not belong in a Monster Manual. I would much rather have this material in a new Book of Lairs series (hint hint), or have Dungeon magazine provide it in their pages as Side Treks. Otherwise its a waste of pages.

I've been a DM for about 15 years, and can see why many think that this book was not on par with previous editions. on the positive, for new dm's, or those without large amounts of time to plan can appreciate the monsters with class levels in the base 4 archtypes. i will admit, there have been plenty of times that i've had to do a shoddy mismatch of humanoid and class levels in a pinch. having it pre-planned gives a little more spark. weigh that against new monsters, its like apples and oranges. with the monsters in the other manuals, add to those from other publishers, it isn't going to kill the creature catalog to loose a few pages to the class levels, maps, and organizations within the book. Nit-pick for me was having the templates within the manual and not at the end of the book (my anal-retentiveness for remembering what books have what templates) Over all, liked the clockworks (more smaller ones needed, that's the jules vernian fascination in me tho), for me, the time saving beats the pages lost. Will i ever use half the monsters, no, but thats the same with most of the other books, i go theme based, over hit list any day of the game.my 2 copper

As a DM who enjoys immersing my players into the eternal struggle between the evils of the dragon goddess Tiamat and those of the Good Dragon King Bahamut, the spawn of Tiamat are a frequently encountered enemy in my adventures. For those who are used to the format of previous editions, the monster statistics block had a slight change, but not to worry! Everything you need to know is still there. It took me some getting used to, but I think most DMs will find it convenient. Take advantage of the myriad creatures within, but be warned, there may be more monsters than your adventurers can cleave.

From the cover of the book and the excerpts on the site, I should have known that this book was going to contain a bit too much fluff.That said, though, the book has it's positives. First off, I like the new stat block. It's a lot easier to scan than older run-on blobs of impenetrable animation. Secondly, I like the Sample Lairs and Encounters - they give you a couple good ways to insert monsters smoothly into a larger adventure. Also, there are some just plain awesome new monsters, from the intriguing intelligent undead, the Vitreous Drinker, to the fascinating Zern, who have already found a place in my current campaign. Overall, I was able to draw a lot of inspiration just by flipping through the book, and the format allowed me to better realize the ideas that were coming to me.But then there are the little things (and, yea, the big ones), that make me wish I'd just borrowed the book.First off, while there is a lot of good art, there's also a lot of subpar art, too. The Art of DnD has always made a big difference to me, because if there are pictures included for reference, to make it easier for the PCs to visualize their cool opponent, I want that cool opponent to freaking look cool. So a lot of cool creatures were ruined for me because of untantalizing art. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, I care so, so, so very little about the Spawn of Tiamat. So little do I care. And yet, there is a Chapter of an entry about them. How wonderful. And they feature on the cover too. Nice. If I found the creature concept interesting, I'd be delighted to find a whole section of the book devoted to them, instead of just being disappointed and skipping a dozen pages when flipping through.Thirdly, and this is a problem that will resonate with very few people, as it's sort of a pet peeve - there is no love for psionics. None. The githyanki are included (with atrocious art, I might add), but where are the githzerai, their closely-related, simultaneously-introduced counterparts? Or any of the other psionic races? And why, oh, please why, is there a Githyanki battlecaster, yet no sign of a Githyanki with an actual psionic class?I can understand that a lot of books leave out Psionics because it's a difficult new system to introduce to a DM and to a campaign, and that it's only marginally more in use than, say, Incarnum, but come on. The last time psionics got attention was in Monster Manual II, which is unfortunately a 3.0 DnD book, which means that all Psionics material is completely outdated, overpowered, and very difficult for your average DM to translate into 3.5 rules. And the Githyanki are psionic creatures. If Psionics isn't going to get any love, WotC at least shouldn't go butchering them to make them fit the mainstream DnD system.So there you have it. Some good strong points, which make the book definitely worth a read. But it is not worth owning as a reference book. Maybe the next Monster Manual.

This reads like a Latin version of the Great Gatsby although it largely ignores the plight of the thousands if not millions who suffered at the hands of Escobar and his peers all over the world. A fascinating read, it could be a novel just as well given so few were privy to this level of excess.

Book is very hard to follow. It jumps from topic to topic and most of the time I am wondering - what is the point, and there is none most of the time. The book is focused and making sure that we know the the main character is " educated, elegant, always wearing a designer close, hangs out with elite and has aristocratic background" rather then understanding the era of Pablo Esocobar. I had to go back several times just to understand time line. It is very surprising to me that this women is or ever was a journalist given that she cannot tell a story

If, unlike most of the world, you do not have an aunt who was a piece of ass back in the day and waisted her top years on every dude with a little cash, and constantly moves between bragging and lamenting, then this is the book for you. The rest of us can just catch up with auntie over the holidays.

Gives new perspective on the narco, but found the author a bit narcissistic and she would have done a better job telling the story in a straight forward manner rather than presenting a twisted version where she tries to portray herself as a victim to protect her image

The front cover has some type of sticky residue all over the front of it.There is a scrape on the upper front cover with a what appears to be a wet stain on the first few pages.I'm returning this book and asking for a replacement.

Great Read!!

The author wrote about her affair with Pablo Escobar in a raw and honest way that I really respected. She admitted that she was vain and self-centered and was not shy about letting the reader know about her other faults. Her fall from grace was interesting to read about and I cannot wait to see the movie that is coming out based on this book.

It's difficult to go at this because any reader might come to the piece from so many different perspectives. This is not a work of scholarship, nor is it evangelical. And I find each of those points greatly in its favor. I think it would be best to read it after checking out a survey source to familiarize yourself with the essentials of the tradition. I strongly suggest Huston Smith. Smith was a preeminent scholar of world religion and a Buddhist practitioner (among several other spiritual traditions-really!) for many years while maintaining his identity as a Christian: a fascinating guy whose work deserves a lengthy review of its own. PC's central point is that all of this stuff is about developing genuine compassion/Lovingkindness/Maitri for ourselves, and thereby for the other living beings of our world. Nothing here about floating around under the ceiling, holding your breath for an hour and a half...or finally coming to THE TRUE RELIGION...or THE TRUE BUDDHISM, either. It's about how to live well by incorporating an honest spiritual practice and set of rational beliefs into our life. I would also like to stress the importance of PC being a native English speaker. Sadly many people have a misunderstanding of this tradition because so many of it's early teachers had to rely on literal translations as a result of their not being sufficiently fluent to explain the essentially spiritual concepts that they were trying to put across. Obviously, this commentary is a huge fan letter, and everyone will not come away with the same opinion. Regardless, The Wisdom...is well worth a look..hey, it's really pretty short😇

Very insightful read. I was getting migraines and as soon as I started reading this book, they went away. When I stopped reading, they came back. I realized that I was practicing what she had written as I was reading. The whole practice put my mind at ease, and that is probably why I didn't notice the migraine. This book is great for everyone, especially those with anger issues. Seriously, it can and will help if you are able to keep and opened mind and read it for what it is. Very easy reading.

The book is a collection of talks the author gave during a month long retreat. I found that made most chapters perfect for a morning read before work to get my mind started on the right track.

Each short chapter has such meat that I am able to sit with and meditate so to make the information my own. EVERYTHING I have been going through has been addressed in this book. AND it is so simple to give myself this loving kindness as I sit with the feeling and then let it go. This is a MUST READ. Stay open to the concepts. Allow this to minister to your spirit as it has mine!

i will update this when i have finished the book...but i just felt impassioned to say how much i love the authors style of writing. so many authors do not write in a humble style. this author is not preachy at all. nor egocentric. i love that.

Fantastic book by Pema, right up there with When Things Fall Apart as my favorite of hers. Heartfelt, very wise, very gentle. Just what I need to hear. Although it was published in 1989 or 1990, it is no less cogent now than it was then. That's the thing about Buddhist books -- they always speak to you if/when you're ready for them. The teachings are as alive today as they ever were.

Pena Chodron has written many books. This book like her other ones remind us of how precious and infinite life can be.

This is one of my favorite books by Pema Chodron. It not only does a very good job of describing the essence of Buddhism, but it goes beyond that in making Tibetan Buddhism more understandable and relevant to a Western audience without deveating from the tradition. In short, it contains the heart of the teachings of the Vajrayana. A nice complimentary book if you are interested in going deeper into Tibetan Buddhism is Fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism. These books compliment each other and the latter puts all of the Buddhist traditions in historical context. Huston Smith's essay in The World's Religions: Our Great Wisdom Traditions or Buddhism: A Concise Introduction. You get more bang for your buck with the former Huston Smith book, however.The fundamental teaching of the Buddha involves the following realizations: 1) Life is suffering; 2) The cause of suffering is selfish desire; 3) To get rid of selfish desire, follow the eightfold path. The essence of the eightfold path is a moral life grounded in a strong loving-kindness practice (A Mahayana emphasis, but true of all schools). This book provides precisely that -- a path of loving-kindness that any person could follow and apply to their life. When asked what religion the Dalai was, he once said... "my religion is loving-kindess." While the Dalai Lama didn't officially endorse the book that I know of, certainly it is written in keeping with this spirit.This book covers a LOT of ground in short volume of about 108 pages. It looks at the existential situation of not being able to escape our life and the human condition which is characterized by suffering. The Buddha said as his last words, "be a lamp unto yourselves." I believe the intent here was that no super mommy or daddy in the sky is going to come down and save you from the human condition. You must look deeply to see the truth and this will liberate you from samsara or the cycle of suffering. In this book, Pema Chodron describes the Buddha's teachings and more importantly practices to help you to arrive at a place of loving-kindness and equanimity.What I most like about this book is that she keeps things simple. She also describes Tonglen practice and other forms of meditation and habits of thought that cultivate a mind that is not locked in conditioned thinking. Krishnamurti once said, "seeing the truth deeply is what liberates, not your efforts to be free." A corallary to this might be... yes... but what limits how deeply you can see is your depth of compassion for others, but primarily for yourself. This book is a manual about how to cultivate a loving-kindness that allows you to penetrate the insufficiency of living for things like money, sex, power and status. It is a good read for anyone.If you are interested in a somewhat different Western perspective or something to contrast these writings with then try A Path with Heart: A Guide Through the Perils and Promises of Spiritual Life. This book by Jack Kornfield emphasizes an earlier Buddhist tradition namely the Theravada (Way of the Elders). Mahayana Buddhism was an outgrowth of these teachings and Tibetan Buddism (Vajrayana) a further extension and elaboration. Jack Kornfield is a Western psychologist who spent a number of years in Thailand as a Buddhist monk and his perspective is accessible, entertaining, practical and complimentary to this book. If you are looking for a more integrative read that relates to Western Psychology directly try Toward a Psychology of Awakening: Buddhism, Psychotherapy, and the Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation. This is a more difficult read, but extremely worthwhile. There are other recommendations on my listmania lists of this is your area of interest.

Religion has often been defined as "Man's search for God". It encompasses so much; so many cultures and differences. But Grace it seems is about God's search for man....and that is what this book is about. It's about God making Himself known and the passionate way He goes about it!This book took me on a journey at sea with the author where I smelled the salt air and envisioned the height of the waves around me. But the parallel journey I was on with him left me more than entertained or in awe of very good writing. By the time I hit the second chapter I couldn't put it down, not only because of the story and suspense, but because it held my life in a grip all the way up to the last page and for hours and days afterward contemplating all the gifts it had brought me.I have been a reader all my life. I have a study lined with books. This book however will not be joining them. It will be on my nightstand and in my suitcase so I will never forget all the golden nuggets it has brought to my life. I will re-read it, which I hardly ever do. I won't tell any of the specifics of what gems it will have for your life because it will be personal for each reader. It's written that way, personal, and specific, and intimate.Thanks, Jeff, for writing it, and for being an instrument of God for peace in my life as well as for anyone who courageously takes on the waves with you in Navigating Grace.

Jeff Jay has written a masterful piece of literary nonfiction that reads like an adventure novel and resonates like an intimate memoir. Jay is an addiction counselor and experienced sailor of Michigan’s Great Lakes when he sets sail to the Virgin Islands with visions of living on his boat and running an on-board halfway house for recovering addicts. His plans and course are diverted, however, when he sails into an unavoidable and torrential storm that about sinks his sailboat and nearly kills him a good dozen times; it’s a gripping read as he knows he will not survive, believes he doesn’t deserve to survive, and yet he does everything he can in case by some miracle he does. He had been saved before, after all, and this was an important theme in the book: Years prior, alcoholism would have killed him had his parents not intervened and got him into a rehabilitation center where he only wanted to drink again and knew he would drink again until all at once, his intellectual mindfulness succumbed to extraordinary spiritual awakening.Jay does not evade or qualify the role of Alcoholics Anonymous in his life. He’s still an addictions counselor and professional interventionist, and this wasn’t his first book published by Hazelden. In fact, as much as I love an artful memoir, if Jeff Jay weren’t also my second cousin and my mom and great aunt hadn’t been in a slight tizzy about what Jay wrote about my grandpa in the book, it’s less than likely that I would have wanted to read a “recovery” book simply due to my own cynicism – a personal story of recovery and redemption, yes, but one published by a world renowned alcohol and drug treatment organization? I had that eerie feeling going into it that I did before reading The In-Between (Goins, 2014) that had a Christian publisher, feeling I had to read on the defensive lest I be brainwashed into cult-like thinking by too much God worship in the prose, but it never happened. Jay’s prose appealed to my cynical side. He’s smart, and honest and brave, and I don’t mean in how he handled his sailboat in that ocean storm alone but with his wordsmithey.He’s a wonderful writer, insightful, poetic. He cleverly juxtaposes the storm with his near death from alcoholism, his father’s passing from leukemia soon after, and more recently his brother’s tragic suicide and then Jay’s divorce, but suicide tends to overshadow everything that comes after it for the survivors, yes? I’ve known that kind of loss and have written about it too, and it’s not easy to express such depth of grief without becoming sentimental or trite. The storm was the perfect metaphor for Jay’s reflections. He wrote probably the best memoir I’ve ever read, and I already mentioned loving this genre, but my master’s degree is in Creative Nonfiction too; I take the craft seriously and have critical expectations. Yet I hung on some of Jay’s sentences for so long that when I did get to the last page, I wept. I both didn’t want it to end and was so grateful to have arrived that it was like his journey had become mine, and we had both survived. And more, he knew I would. That’s how I felt! I just want to thank him so much for sharing his story and making it all of ours. It’s a must read for everyone, and don’t skip the epilogue.

There are many memoirs written about journey's through the addiction process to recovery. This is no ordinary memoir - this will go down as a classic in the field. Jeff Jay has written a masterpiece that compels the reader to keep turning the page, and to pause along the way in wonder at the experience, past and present. I caught myself re-reading sentences and paragraphs for the sheer beauty of the style; and basking in descriptions that defy the imagination. Read this - it will change you, as the experience changed Jeff Jay.

An rousing adventure both internal and external. A quest, a true hero's journey within. A must read for all of those who seek to know what is it all about. A journey with a most authentic and genuine guide and fellow seeker. If you do not mark up this book with highlights, page tabs etc. you are going to be flipping through it for the rest of your life saying, "where was that part about...?" Clearly a book about which you can say "If this book is falling apart, you can be reasonably sure your life is not."

"Oh would some Power the gift give us, To see ourselves as others see us" (Robert Burns). Jeff Jay tells a tale so rich in detail that in reading it we see, hear, smell, feel, and even taste the journey with him as he earns his gift of honest self appraisal. We cower in fear, collapse in exhaustion, and thumb our noses at death along with him. We meet his mentors, hear their wisdom, and we learn about the lengths our God will go to, to redeem a modern day prodigal. Because of his courageous, self-revealing saga, we gain strength to face our own dark nights with deep honesty, and we re-visit with deeper trust our own encounters with a Power greater than ourselves. Read it. You will see what I mean.

Holy cow. I said this over and over as I read this book. I wish I could give it six stars. Navigating Grace reads like a wonderful and suspenseful novel. The old adage is that truth is stranger than fiction. This book reveals that truth can also be more glorious, graceful, and triumphant than fiction. Jeff Jay does a tremendous job of sharing his personal testimony that turns out to be powerful, uplifting, and mesmerizing. His story confirms that grace is the most powerful force in the universe.
