This dictionary has been an irreplaceable material in my education in Quechua. Starting from the quintevocal (5 vowel) pronunciation of Quechua used by many bilingual and Mestizo Quechua speakers in Peru and Bolivia, it is one of the few materials which respects Quechua's living nature in places like the city of Cuzco.
This book is a great resource for students and native speakers alike. I have studied Quechua both in the United States and Peru for several years. I’ve worked with many dictionaries, but this one is by far the most comprehensive and easy to use. Different regions have different ways of spelling words, so thats important to keep in mind when looking up definitions. This book is from a primarily Cusco perspective for example. I also enjoy that the entries include variations of words (such as puñuy, to sleep, may also have puñushay which means to be sleeping, and other variations). This is a really useful feature to start recognizing the different suffixes. I would highly recommend utilizing this dictionary.
I am a traveler who doesn’t speak Quechua, and I think this will be very useful for me when I go to Peru this year. It’s so convenient to have English, Spanish and Quechua in one book; I can easily find the words I’m looking for.
This is very a useful dictionary for Quechua students, specially for those who don't master Spanish. The trilingual Quechua-Spanish-English presentation makes the publication quite unique (the only similar publication is the Diccionario Trilingüe by Esteban and Nancy Hornberger, which was published in the 1980s and is quite hard to get).The format of this new dictionary is very clean and user-friendly. I'm including it on my syllabus for the Quechua class I teach at college.The audience for this publication is people already studying or doing research with Quechua. If you are looking for a much larger Quechua dictionary, then you will need to review the ones that are published in Quechua-Spanish formats (made by other recognized linguists).Important info: This dictionary is not a language manual. The Lonely Planet Quechua Phrasebook might be more useful for the purpose of learning quick or survival phrases while traveling to the Andes. Therefore, please don't blame this dictionary if you can't communicate in Quechua throughout the Andes.
An incredibly valuable book, the first of its kind and a much needed addition to the dearth of such resources for Quechua language learners. I trust this book will foster the study of this beautiful language and inspire generations of learners.
This is an excellent reference book for Cusqueñan Quechua. As the authors state in the very detailed introduction, the book will not contain all possible words for the language, as you can conjugate an infinite number of words due to its system of suffixes. As it is, though, it contains thousands of useful terms that would be of great value to anthropologists, linguists, travelers, language students, and heritage speakers. Given that there are hardly any high quality Quechua dictionaries available in the US, and that this one even includes English, it is amazing that this book exists.
Useless so far. Not one use has proven to provide any help. The common word and only one I can remember so far = Kawsaypaq not in there. Other attempts to use this dictionary prove fruitless. I plug in words spoken by my native Cusco Quchua speaker prove fruitless.
This dictionary is amazing and there are very few available like it ! Useful for travelers and students studying Quechua alike. As a student who has studied Quechua for 3 years, I highly recommend.
