Review

"Nick Drnaso's Sabrina is the best book―in any medium―I have read about our current moment. It is a masterpiece, beautifully written and drawn, possessing all the political power of polemic and yet simultaneously all the delicacy of truly great art. It scared me. I loved it."―Zadie Smith "Sabrina is startling. Drnaso's formal ingenuity and confidence is matched by the acuity and depth of the story's awareness of who and where we are right now."―Jonathan Lethem"Nick Drnaso is one of the most ambitious, singular cartoonists to emerge in recent years, and his dedication to novelistic fiction is an inspiration. Incisive, chilling, and completely unpredictable, Sabrina demonstrates the inexplicable power of comics at their best."―Adrian Tomine “[Sabrina] is a Midwestern gothic tale for our times… A shattering work of art.”―The New York Times 100 Notable Books of the Year“Sabrina is not only a step forward for comic strip literary fiction, but a book that shows, as well as tells, the slippery horrors of our post-truth reality.”―The Guardian Best Books of 2018“It's a chilling distillation of the way the world feels nowadays.”―NPR’s Best Books of 2018"Drnaso’s simple, rigid drawings capture the bleak blankness of much contemporary life, anomie hovering over almost every interaction, both real and virtual... [Sabrina] leaves the audience holding its breath."―Kathleen Rooney, The Chicago Tribune

No documentary, mockumentary, youtube clip, news special, social media post, film, book, podcast, or article has ever captured the complexity of media and humanity in 21st century America quite so lucidly as this graphic novel (so far). Drnaso is giving us a mirror to stare at, which is frightening but also difficult to turn away from.

Drnaso works like a filmmaker at the top of his game, imbuing landscape and deep-focus space with longing, emptiness and dread. At times, Sabrina seems a modern reconfiguration of The Searchers — updating John Ford’s combination of American myth, purity and paranoia to the present moment. Negative reviewers here seem to be missing the point of Drnaso's "flat" style. It forces the reader to look, and look, and look -- is there something I'm missing in this panel? A detail or pattern I've overlooked? Is that person to be trusted or not? Is that a man, a woman, another category? The cumulative effect is to cultivate empathy -- but also paranoia and suspicion, which replicates elegantly both what we'd like to be and what we've become. For me, the impact was disturbing and also strangely redemptive.

This is the first graphic novel I've ever purchased. I've read a few over the years, at the library, but I've never bought one. I bought Sabrina because I read that it was the first graphic novel ever to make the long list of the Man Booker Prize (the short list will be announced Sept. 20). Here's a good description (and part plug) of the book, stolen from themanbookerprize.com: Where is Sabrina? The answer is hidden on a videotape, a tape which is en route to several news outlets, and about to go viral. Sabrina is the story of what happens when an intimate, ‘everyday’ tragedy collides with the appetites of the 24-hour news cycle; when somebody’s lived trauma becomes another person’s gossip; when it becomes fodder for social media, fake news, conspiracy theorists, maniacs, the bored. What's brilliant about Sabrina and probably other graphic novels is that it does things that can't be done on film or in prose. (If you're watching a movie and it shows a lot of text on a computer screen, you're not going to have good things to say about that movie.) Speaking of the text on computer screens, the one false note in Sabrina is that the author has conspiracy buff nut jobs (a redundancy) writing perfect English in their posts, with proper capitalization and punctuation. Not that I look at that sort of thing much, but from what I've seen of such writing (Trump's tweets, e.g.) I can tell you this: they don't write that well. I guess the book is in high demand and that the publishers didn't anticipate that because it took weeks to get it delivered. It was expensive, too, and that's a qualm I had with it. I understand that printing an entire book in color cost more than just black text on paper, but Sabrina is not printed with rich inks on glossy paper, nor should it be—being slick in any way would detract from its message. Still, the $27 price point was high for a book that you're going to finish in under two hours. I can't recommend buying it at that price unless you're going to share it with others.

Sabrina is, of course, the first picture book to be nominated for the Booker prize. This will prove a disservice to the medium; surely there were twenty or fifty more worthy works published, and this certainly didn't motivate me to seek out another one.The art, I hope, is not representative. It's ugly, it adds little, all the characters look the same. Surely there's a more innovative way to represent alienation than a lonely Hardee's on the side of the road. If that's somehow the point, the point is trite. We get it.The plot also doubtlessly caught the committee's eye. Chicagoland's five hundred seventy-eighth homicide of the year reunites two former pals, and they eat burgers and drink microbrews together, but alone, because that's the kind of place America is nowadays. I was shocked to find diners empty and video game lobbies full.Looming large over the plot is Alex Jones, one of the USA's most respected public intellectuals. One hardly needs explain how Jones has drawn acclaim far and wide for his insights on national affairs. To this point, few have been willing to stand up to Jones's movement, but Drnaso and the Booker committee make a powerful case that society may not benefit if he remains unchecked. This brave, necessary act of punching up against people who listen to Infowars leads me to round up to two stars.

On the positive side, I understand the praise for the cinematic approach to storytelling. The way the book shows the awkwardness of human interactions and the bleakness of the suburban landscape is very well done.Opposite that, my disppointment. It's hard to express my take on this book without spoiling the story for other readers. I'll say that I found the arc of the story and especially the resolution of the mystery very unsatisfying.

Sabrina is unnerving, distressing subtle, and humane. I couldn’t put it down. With a story that explores real human tragedy, the horrifying implications of extremist conspiracy theories, and the troubled lives of everyday people, this graphic novel is a compelling masterpiece.

Stay the Course: The Story of Vanguard and the Index Revolution

From the Inside Flap

Stay the Course is the gripping story of the creation of what would become largest mutual fund organization in the world, as told by its founder, John C. Bogle. Readers will come to appreciate Bogle as a unique innovator in the world of mutual funds—an investor who used his market wisdom and business savvy to bring mutual fund investors their fair share of stock and bond market returns. This book will delight anyone who enjoys a good story with a happy ending. In 1974, when the story of The Vanguard Group began, the idea of a mutual fund that was truly mutual—owned by the fund shareholders themselves and operating on an "at-cost" basis with no profits to outside shareholders—was viewed as anathema by many seasoned investors. Not deterred by his colleagues' caution and, sometimes, outright hostility, John Bogle persevered, building what would become a $5 trillion mutual fund complex. Vanguard's remarkable success is inextricably intertwined with the index revolution that has changed the way we think about professional money management. Buying and holding the market portfolio turns out to be the simplest and soundest path to investment success. Bogle's creation—the S&P 500 Index fund—is the spark that ignited the flame of the index revolution. Bogle concludes his book with some personal insights. His memoir-like final chapter gives readers some valuable insights into the thinking of Vanguard's legendary creator. Bogle's engaging tale overflows with business insights and inspiration that you won't want to miss.

About the Author

JOHN C. BOGLE is the founder and former CEO of The Vanguard Group and the world's first index mutual fund. A graduate of Blair Academy and Princeton University, he has spent his entire career in the mutual fund industry—67 years (and counting). Stay the Course is Mr. Bogle's twelfth book, a string that began with Bogle on Mutual Funds (1993). Subsequent books include: Common Sense on Mutual Funds (1999, updated 2010), The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism (2005), Enough. (2008), and The Little Book of Common Sense Investing (2007) and its 10th Anniversary Edition (2017). A prolific writer for the investment profession, Mr. Bogle has had 28 of his papers published in the The Financial Analysts Journal and The Journal of Portfolio Management. In 1998, CFA (Chartered Financial Analysts) Institute presented Bogle with its highest homage, the Award for Professional Excellence. For his extraordinary lifetime achievements in serving investors, Bogle has received honorary doctorate degrees from 13 universities, including Princeton, Georgetown, Delaware, Villanova, and Trinity. In 2004, TIME magazine named him as one of "the world's 100 most influential people." Despite a devastating setback in his career in 1974, and frequent serious health challenges (he received a heart transplant in 1996), John Bogle remains fully active in his career and with his family—wife Eve, six children, twelve grandchildren, and (so far) six great-grandchildren. His advice to his family is the same as his advice to investors, entrepreneurs, and readers of this book: "In good times and bad times alike, Stay the Course."

Jack Bogle is a hero of mine. I may not be the most fanatical Boglehead, but (i) I regard his achievements with awe, (ii) I've been a Vanguard client more or less since I emigrated to the US and (iii) his mantra of "keep the costs low" has been mine as well for more decades than I care to recall.Alas, this book was a big disappointment. (i) It is a continuous stream of conceit. There's no denying his superlative achievements, but this book reads like an arrogant twenty-something's LinkedIn posting. (ii) The book is desperately short of objectivity He relentlessly presents every argument he can find in support of his own ideology, but the only references to arguments against are to those that he feels he can knock down. (iii) His references to performance are all based on comparative returns, but he makes no mention of comparative volatility. This book would have been *so* much better if it had been written by an outsider. (i) The inevitable huge praise for Vanguard would have come across as much more seemly than the boastful tone to which the reader is subjected here. (ii) The reader would (I hope) have been presented with a much more objective viewpoint. (iii) The points against the Bogle approach would have been evaluated more fairly. I have little doubt that Bogle would have been described as a vitally important and beneficial force in the investment world and that would have carried so much more credibility coming from an outsider than coming from Bogle himself.Your achievements speak for themselves, Jack: you do yourself no favours with such unbridled bragging.

I have read four of John Bogle's books, and his clear analytical advice guided me in investing for my goals over 30 years. His guidance on reducing investment costs to obtain most of the market return has guided me on my own investments and in my role as trustee for several family trusts. In reading his book "Stay the course", it is evident that John Bogle puts the fund shareholder's interest first and his personal gain near the last. This is exactly the reverse of most investment adviser. In each of his books and in my interactions with Vanguard employees, it is clear that the fund investor's interest is ranked first. I recommend all of Mr. Bogle's books.

A wonderful history of a man and company that changed the world. As stated time and time again, no single individual has done more to fight for the average investor than Jack Bogle. The book is a wonderful biography of Vanguard and Jack's history. Well done 👍

Great story of how John Bogle worked hard to implement his investment strategy which instead of allowing him to succeed at others expense as is usually the case, the more he succeeded the more his clients succeeded.

He was smart and one of the people you can really count on for advice . Always a good read

I’ve followed John Bogle’s advice for years and I’m happy with the results. Managed funds just eat into your returns.

The latest book from Vanguard founder Jack Bogle is an autobiographical glimpse into the successes and failures of a man who forever changed the financial services industry. While at Princeton, Bogle’s thesis developed certain principles of investing that included:• Reducing sales charges and management fees.• Funds do not beat market averages.• The investment company should serve its fund shareholders. What makes this story so fascinating is not just the principles developed by an idealistic college student in an Ivy League bubble, but rather his lifetime struggle to deliver on those principles. From being fired from Wellington to starting a tiny fund company known as Vanguard, Jack Bogle recounts his journey and reveals that his innovations were anything but instant successes. Yet, as the title suggests, Bogle “pressed on regardless,” eventually creating what is now a five trillion-dollar fund family, owned solely by its fundholders. This engrossing and engaging memoir gives the reader an insider’s perspective on the principles of investing. Reading this book will help cement what you need to understand for your own financial success.

The story that was fascinating was how Jack took a for profit company and get it to be a not for profit company. It was a long and tedious process. From reading other literature and books, it was vague how Jack was able to get it to happen. Then going no load. Without Jack, we would still be paying 8.5% commission to buy a mutual fund and paying high fees for active management.I also like the final chapter on his memoir on Jack's personal reflections.I have read all of Jack's books, and I would call this one his best. Jack explains reversion to the means in examples where things go up and then go down, so a waste of time chasing yesterday's winners.OK - I am a little bias, I bought the Vanguard STAR fund in 1985 and the Windsor II fund in 1987. Two of my best decisions early on.

I always get these McGraw-Hill books. They always have a sample database and code so you can get "hands-on" experience which is the best way I learn. I haven't purchased one yet that I didn't get all the way through the material and completed all the "hands-on" exercises. Excellent books in my humble opinion!

Fantastic reference book the downloads did not work. In a perfect world the downloads would be available in Access

The description says "400+ ready-to-use, powerful SQL queries". More than 400? Yes. Powerful? No, unless you've never used any SQL at all. If you're already using SQL queries and have any SQL reference, I recommend you save your money. As a moderately experienced, but only occasional SQL developer, I was hoping for a good reference of queries that address issues that are common in the real world and require more than a basic knowledge of T-SQL. The queries in this book are just too simplistic to be called powerful and that "deliver actionable business intelligence." It takes 200 pages before the topic of "Subqueries" is addressed (in Chapter 10!) and there are only 8 pages on the topic. There are some useful examples in this book, but just not what I was looking for.

I received this book via the MN SQL Server user group ([...]). Being an advanced SQL Server developer, I read this book with the mindset that I can always learn something new with the features of SQL Server. I thought this book had some refreshing queries/tips and functions that I don't use every day. I particular liked the approach the author took in explaining the concepts clearly. The way he divided every function/feature with the following sections: definition, syntax, result and analysis really helped in cutting the chase. I am one of those who learn "by doing" and this book was all that. This was also a good reference for me to go back and see what will be the result if I rewrite one of my queries the way Art suggests. I liked the simple approach he took and how practical he made the book with so many examples to get your hands wet.Overall a good read, I definitely recommend this for both new and some advanced readers.
