I had just discovered Demitasse, a little gem of a coffee shop in Oak Bay, Victoria. While paying for my pecan square and cappuccino, I noticed an attractive cookbook next to the cash. I immediately recognized that this is a book I had to have. You see, I lived in Montreal (the foodie capital of North America) for many years. It was taking me a while to adapt to western Canadian cuisine and culture. It is very difficult to find a coffee shop or restaurant (other than a chain restaurant or pub) open after 5:00 in the city, so I was a little depressed.Hmmm, there had to be a way to discover the best that Victoria had to offer. So I started walking. and walking. Guess what? There is a fabulous brunch culture in Victoria! Local chefs have combined fresh, organic ingredients and unusual combinations that will knock your socks off.Rebecca Wellman's book, "First, We Brunch" is a companion guide to the good brunch life here in the city. I had already visited several of the local restaurants and was pleasantly surprised to learn that little restaurants I would walk by fairly frequently also had brunch menus.The book begins with a quote: "In Victoria, BC, we have priorities. First, we brunch". Rebecca's motto "I'm a simple woman. I like handsome, bearded men and breakfast food" had me from the first page. The book showcases several local breakfast institutions along with some pretty amazing photographs of dishes they serve. Did you know that Rebecca is a talented photographer in her own right? Yep. I love a great photo book and Rebecca's images make you want to put the book under your arm and run out for a "Dark Ale Caramel Toast with Espresso Whip" (the picture on the cover).You can find a few recipes of some of your favourite dishes in the book as well farms and business where you can source local, fresh ingredients. Maps of Victoria can be found on the inside of both the front and back covers.If you aren't sure where to begin, she has included a chart to make your selection easier. I'm looking forward to all sorts of new discoveries this winter! :D

This is the most beautiful, sumptuous book. First of all, Rebecca's photos are pieces of art. I sat down on several occasions and read this tome like a storybook. Each recipe is anchored in a specific brunch spot, artisan producer, or specialty shop. Rebecca profiles these fascinating individuals / places then presents a recipe that is the culmination of their efforts. I have tried a few of the recipes and they are spectacular, for brunch or indeed for any meal of the day (who doesn't like breakfast for dinner? I mean, come on). I love how "First, We Brunch" projects a worthy spotlight on Victoria's thriving brunch scene, often voted the best in Canada. Amazing gift idea, or do as I did and buy it as a gift to yourself. I’m so glad I purchased this audibook. I have not read the original Servant Leadership book but, the chapters included in here give such a well rounded view that I really get the idea of Servant Leadership. In fact, I can’t imagine learning about this approach to leadership without the examples of putting the concept into action. The variety of authors also allowed for different approaches to show “one size does not fit all”. It also demonstrates that servant leadership can be applied in all types of businesses, agencies, schools, and non-profits of all sizes. This concept is not exclusive to churches or social change agencies there is benefit in one way or another for everyone.This book also introduced me to other authors and presenters that I have not heard of otherwise.

Get this book. Just do yourself a life-affirming favor and get it. I normally do not like edited books with many contributors since I prefer the continuity of thought and intent that comes from a single author but this is clearly an exception. It contains powerful perspectives from people who have "been there and done that" and I mined value from each essay. As someone who teaches, trains, and coaches on leadership development, this work should be on your leadership bookshelf or in your device.

Realized my estate planning had not been updated in quite some time and didn't want to incur the expense of a lawyer. This was the best book that I found. I was so surprised to find that one of the authors is a financial planner who writes a weekly article in my Sunday paper. The articles are so good. . .I frequently clip them to share with my grown children. The other author was the attorney for my husband's CPA firm. I was not disappointed. The book is great and easy to read. It is well organized and easy to find the topic you are interested in.My children may get a copy for Christmas. It is very appropriate for adults of all ages.

It's a super great book. Goes direct to the changes that took place in 2012 and goes in depth in specific chapter to each change. As a Life Insurance agent that is moving to talk to different kind of affluent clients with mixed needs, you are in good hands. You will look in the eyes of the client in a way that you are not just a sales man that only talks about whole life policies. Don’t waste your money. I had high hopes for this book but it goes nowhere. Endless pages of character descriptions, all of them full of snark. A professional edit would be strongly advised to the author and perhaps some story writing classes would help. If I still had my receipt, I'd ask for my money back.

The author sent me this book, free of charge, for an honest review.This book was definitely different. Right off the bat, you can tell its going to be weird because it says that its a "metal" novel.The novel pretty much follows Ronnie and her friends as they live life through the 80's. And boy, does it scream 80's. I was born in 1992, so I never had the privilege of living in that time, but by reading this book, I got a pretty good idea of what life was like.Holy crap, some of the things that these kids did while in school and out of school blew my mind. I would have never ditched school to go to a party... Probably because there were no parties going on during the school day.This book was very enjoyable and fun to read. It wasn't my favorite but I enjoyed it all the same just because I've never read anything like it before and it was very very different.Thank you, Towhidy for writing this book! I think everyone who didn't grow up in the 80's should pick this baby up.

* I received a free e copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review *Based solely on the storyline, I would have given this book a 2 but add in it's uniqueness and I thought it was worth a 3.Arcadia centers around a high school girl named Farrah, aka Ronnie, and her friends. The author treats you to a first hand look at the California party scene of the late 1980s that you wouldn't otherwise see unless you lived it.I thought the book was really unique in that it included it's very own soundtrack. Not at the end of the book as an afterthought like most authors do, but worked right into the story where you could listen to the songs as you read. That in itself took this book from a 2 star review to a 3 star for me. I've never read an e-book that had that feature. I thought it was pretty cool.As far as the story goes, I just couldn't get into it. It just never seemed to go anywhere. In each chapter Ronnie introduces you to a different character in her life. The characters are all very well thought out and complex but you weren't given the opportunity to connect with any of them. I spent the entire book feeling sorry for them and I'm sure that is not the feeling that the author was trying to give us. Also, I felt like the author was a little (a lot) redundant. In each chapter you're treated to a paragraph or two where she lists every article of clothing that each person is wearing or each band that she's ever heard of or listened to. Towards the end there are several pages dedicated exclusively to the word vomit typed over and over. It just seemed like overkill. At the same time, even though this story wasn't for me, I do admit that I had a hard time putting it down.While Arcadia wasn't my cup of tea and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone, if you are now or have ever considered yourself a metal head, don't just take my word for it. Read it for yourself and form your own opinion.

****I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for my stop on the blog tour.****Arcadia took a minute for me to get into with the slang, but once I was in, I was in and there was no going back. This was a fresh and entertaining read that kept me up late because I didn't want the party to end. I grew up in the early to mid-90's grunge era, and at times, I almost wished I had grown up in the metal scene.I couldn't help but wonder if any school could be the way Ronnie describes hers where students ditch class daily and come back drunk or high. Whether it's realistic or not, it didn't bother me one way or the other. I was a little jealous of the way Ronnie lived without caring what others think. She's young and free with seemingly little to no consequences dealt to her.There is so much description that it'd be impossible to not picture Ronnie and her friends, but it was also sometimes a problem for me. There is a LOT of description, which at times made Ronnie go off on long tangents. Once I realized she had brought me back to the present, it took me a moment to remember where I was in the story. On the other hand, some of the most fun parts of Arcadia were the lengthy character descriptions.If you like the 70's of Dazed and Confused and the 90's of My So-Called Life, then you need the 80's of Arcadia!

For most parents, the first time they hear about Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is at a psychologist or psychiatrist office, when they think they are there for a different diagnosis, or it comes WITH the diagnosis they were expecting. But IS it really? And what can parents expect or do about it? THAT is what this book is for. It lets parents (and kids) discover what it actually is in relatable terms, and then lets them work together for a plan on how to handle it. What most parents don't realize immediately is how THERE emotions can play into their child's ODD, and how their reactivity can trigger even bigger outbursts, so that is addressed first.Once the parent has taken their self-care analysis and gotten into a better place, then the needs of the child are addressed. From there, the parent and child work together on a SMART plan to take on different behavior aspects, 1 or 2 at a time. you can't fix everything at once, so the goal is to start small and that can lead to bigger changes, as your child learns better emotional control.Overall the book is a quick read, but contains some very good info on ODD and how there needs to be a 2 prong approach-parent and child- to resolving issues via better methods and treatment ideas. It's a great first step, and might be the solution your family needs.

Interesting novel, the original hypertext. Can be read two ways (and I'm guessing more) according to the front cover. My issue is not with the content of the book but the book itself. I've read the book the linear way - Chapters 1-57, and my book has started spitting out pages in the 250 range. Literally, 3-5 pages have fallen out of the book while reading. I bought the book brand new, this is my first time reading it, so I am frustrated.I have to read the book the second, hopscotch way, and am not looking forward to it with the falling pages.

This is forever one of my favorite books even though I have yet to finish all avenues it provides. The seller I purchased from was outstanding and got the book to me a week early along with a sweet handwritten note! Strong recommendations to anyone looking for a novel adventure.

In the narrative of Cortázar’s Hopscotch, he analyzes the game of hopscotch after the main character, Oliveira, engages with a clocharde named Emmanuéle on the streets of Paris: “One day you learn how to leave Earth and make the pebble climb into Heaven…the worst part of it is that precisely at that moment…no one has learned how to make the pebble climb up into Heaven.”Cortázar continues this idea about failing to reach Heaven in the game: “Childhood is all over…you’re into novels, into the anguish of the senseless divine trajectory, into the speculation about another Heaven that you have to reach too…And since you have come out of childhood…you forget that in order to get to Heaven you have to have a pebble and a toe.”The concept of hopscotch is practical, but Julio Cortázar’s book, Hopscotch, is anything but practical—it is profound. Some of the characters in the story understand the idea to play, most do not. Hopscotch is a set of two books, as told by Julio Cortázar in his Table of Instructions in the beginning of the book. Theses books are a tendril of timelines for Oliveira, because Heaven, according to the game and his actions and desires, becomes elusive to him. La Maga, the other main character, is Oliveira’s lover in Paris: She is an ever-present and formidable force to Oliveira, but this is not enough to for him to stay with her. Once more, the concept of the game of hopscotch is chalked on a Bohemian playground with La Maga, Oliveira, and a group of friends pushing, and some not pushing, the pebble. Eventually, Oliveira moves on to Buenos Aires, his homeland.In Buenos Aires, the playground (in due course) becomes a battlefield for Oliveira. Julio Cortázar’s meticulous sequence of events is portrayed with a party of three: Oliveira, Traveler and his wife, Talita. In the course of the narrative, Traveler gets Oliveira a job in the circus, and then they decide to buy a mental hospital. Over time, the strain of his past terrain of failings and misfortunes manifest into a battle—a battle that Oliveira will not win.A notable mention about Hopscotch is Chapter 34: The poetic and artistic method that Cortázar employs in this chapter is ingenious. HOPSCOTCH by Julio Cortazar is more of a maze exploration than simply a good read, yet I became entranced with the prose.Initially I was attracted to the non-linear format of HOPSCOTCH. Cortazar wants us jumping in and out of the plot line in the main "novel" with seemingly off-the-wall interruptions, but they turn out to be connected after all by the "end." And then some of the juxtapositions are less sublime but equally effective, such as in chapter 14 when Oliveira is looking at Wong's series of pictures depicting an execution in China. As gruesome as the descriptions are, skipping next to chapter 114, I couldn't help but to internalize the absurdity of the "civilized" treatment in the San Quentin prison gas chamber.Anyway, HOPSCOTCH has in fact been a wonderful read but I think this is the kind of book that readers have to give at least fifty pages (even if that happens to be page 210) before the story grabs hold.

Quick and Dirty Review: this book is impressive. It is a must read if you're a fan of the intellectual novel. I found myself having to "translate" it as I went, chapter by chapter, in order to keep up with all the literary, philosophical and historical references. This is not at all a plot-driven book, in fact it seems to be completely unencumbered by any kind of standard novel format. It can be read front to back, back to front, or in the "prescribed" order. Several of the chapters could be extracted completely from the book and stand alone quite nicely. Yet, it is a novel, with a crew of characters and settings you would love to be a part of. Latin American beatniks in 50's Paris? Perfect.I need to find my copy so I can go ahead and start rereading it, slowly, chapter by chapter.

No, really, it is. I will read this book nearly every year for the rest of my life.The story of Saiyuri is a very detailed one, and how she came to be a geisha. The (fictional) biographical novel of a geisha is definitely a wonderful read. I love all things Japanese, and this book is a great insight into the world, as it is well researched and well written. In some places it is like a story, and in others it is like reading an encyclopedia of Japanese culture, and the two mix so well together that it is almost unnoticeable. The characters are believable, and each ones follows their path in life and you know where most of them land. That is definitely good story-telling.Moreover, the book is also going to draw you into a life story you will want to know about, even if you saw the movie first (like me). believe me, the movie has nothing on the book. It only gives you a visual for what the world looks like. The true depth of the book is much deeper, stronger and more drawn out in a way that the reader will find most enjoyable.

Unfortunately, I admit I haven't read this book in twenty or so years and I imagined it reading the same. I couldn't have been more wrong! It's so much more heartbreaking, intriguing and entertaining than when I was younger. There was so much I thought I understood back then that now I appreciate.

Recently I watched the movie again, and then read about it, and was intrigued to read a man had written it AND it was his first book. So of course I had to Edward the book. It was even better than the movie. Interesting to me that the geishas voice changed, matured, even as she added years to her life. I was richly blessed by the reading of this book. Thank you, Mr. Golden, for writing it.

This was the first book selected by the book club I was invited to join at the start of the year. From the first page I was hooked on the beautiful evocative descriptions of people, places and situations. The story is essential the life story of a little girl from a poor fishing village in Japan who finds herself taken to the Trisha district known as Gion , where she overcomes loss of family and the loss of the life of her childhood, and learns the art of being a geisha. We hear the story from Sayuri at the age of 80 years or so, remembering her life and how she came to be where she is today.As I said the descriptions alone are enough to make this a worthwhile read. But the story itself is also full of schemes and intrigue, and shadowy unknown benefactors that influence the course of the protagonist's life with small actions that have tremendous impact. It is also a story of true love, as well as a story about the strength and struggles of women in Japan . It allows the reader to become part of a different culture and way of being...and of appreciating that the two layers of Japanese culture: the surface story as illustrated by the beauty and grace of the geishas versus the broken, harsh, and grimy circumstances that produce the geishas. All of this combines to give a thoroughly absorbing reading experience that leaves one feeling a little richer inside for having completed the book.It was a great book to start off my year and I would recommend it to anyone interested in appreciating gender and culture issues from a different perspective., and to any reader who appreciates a well written tale.

I’d hear so much of this book and in many bookshelves that I craved to read it. This book has an exciting start into the world of a Geisha (a concept I totally misconstrued) and what it must take to be forcefully introduced & endure its lifestyles. Towards the latter half our protagonist falls deeply in love with her accidental customer & keeps endlessly whining about the ‘ not so ‘ difficult choices she could have made to confess her love for him. This is a true story with epithets used to shield customers of the higher echelons in society from being discovered & yes, Sayuri may not have known of how to cut to the chase therefore receiving the benefit of the doubt that my disappointment isn’t truly justified. It’s a memoir after all - one’s journey with no add-ons.

I loved this way more than I expected. I read it in one sitting. To be honest, I was rather disappointed after reading Vol 1, and didn’t think I would dive into 2. But this felt more cohesive, it was funnier, more relatable, and had 100% more heart in it than vol 1. It’s by no means perfect, but I enjoyed it way too much. I really like where it is going — wherever the hell that may be. I’m on board.

I'm a big fan of the author's other work (both the popular and the obscure), but this one just doesn't click with me. I don't find the characters, plot, or themes engaging. His other work tends to find a mildly obscure sub-culture and find a humorous way to explore the people in that culture while also telling a story with surprises and continuity. This one doesn't come together for me in those ways -- the plot twists are resolved too quickly and too serially, the character are too flat, and I don't get any sense that their sub-culture has been characterized.I'll keep reading anything else the author puts out, but this one was a definite miss for me.

Volume 2 of Snotgirl is absolutely stunning. I already have volume 1 (loved it), and this book did not disappoint either. The art style is just gorgeous - I love all the character designs and the bright colors that are used throughout the book. The plot has an excellent mix of comedy and satire... but also with some mysterious dark undertones. It made me excited to turn the page and see what would happen next!I highly recommend if you're looking for a unique story full of drama, intrigue, romance, and mystery. Excellent fashion, too, of course!

Great book, beautiful printing. Love that the main character is an L.A. IG fashion blogger it's hilarious. Only complaint is I wish it had more of the glitter type that was on the cover of the first volume :D

Love this series! It’s super funny and it captures how social media affects all of us and people are different online than in real life. This series was soo good I subscribed to get the single issues in the mail because I can’t wait for the trade paperbacks! I would highly recommend this comic! And the art is soo beautiful! Just a fun read that’ll make you forget about the stressful sh*t you got going on in your life.

From the 11-year-old reader: I loved Snotgirl's second book even more than the first one. Drama, thrills and some surprises. The color palettes with the art are absolutely beautiful. I hope there will be a book 3.

The plot starts out all over the place, but Brian and Leslie deliver again!

Beautiful, weird, dreamlike. A little confusing but mostly fun.
