This book is so intriguing because it is based on real people in a real place. Fact and fiction is a wonderful combination. And I loved the pictures and maps included! But this is more a record of events or a timeline than a novel. It's written as a journal but skips not just days but months at a time so you get more of a sketchy summary than a story. It compactly covers many years and so has little depth. Instead of getting to know characters, you just read LOTS of names. This may be of interest to people living in the area. More words were spent on the establishment of numerous churches than on personalities or rounding out the dramas of frontier living. A true storyteller has enough story lines here for a lifetime of writing and I would love to read them all, but they are not here.There are many publishing errors in this book and that disrespects both the buyer/reader and the hard work of the writer. E-publishing should be held to the same standards as print publishing, where this would not pass. This book needs to be pulled and cleaned.
This book is written in diary-form. The main character is a woman who came to the US from Sweden in the late 1800s. It tells of their struggles to break ground in Kansas to build a home & farm the land. Although it was interesting to read about the things they had to do etc, the diary-form didn't really allow the reader to form a connection with the characters. She spoke of so many different family members, who they married, what children were born and where they were breaking ground. Sometimes the diary entries were few & far between over a years time. It seemed like the family would be celebrating Christmas, then a few entries later it was Christmas again! I,myself, found it hard to really connect to the characters in this. It was ok but I wouldn't waste money on this book.
l hoped this would be a series as good as Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, but doesn't quite reach that standard. I did enjoy the book and it was hard to put down. I believe it's pure fiction yet the writing style is like a genuine diary. I longed at times for more details about the events. The end of the book rushes through time as far as "diary" entries and details. Before I read this book I'd planned to read the entire series, but decided it just wasn't to the level of non-fiction pioneer diaries I've read nor Wilder's tales based on her life.
A Scandinavian family shared their lives while homesteading in Kansas and building their dugout and later building a larger house. Kajas Sverson Runeberg, a Swedish immigrant fights to survive and take care of her family where the wind always blows.Kajas kept a journal for many years of their everyday life. An interesting account of the history in Kansas as the towns are built, railroads and trains are running near their home, neighbors move close by, babies are born, and death occurs. I enjoyed this story and recommend it for all ages. Oh yes, and the butter fell in the well.
This glimpse into the life of an early pioneer on the Kansas prairie held my interest from the beginning to the end. I was rather disappointed when the journal ended. The extreme hardship facing the people became abundantly clear. They have to be envied for their perseverance. Americans today can't really imagine what they went through to stay alive. Yet, they did and eventually did considerably better than just survive. I never thought that I would enjoy a book of this nature, but it really surprised me. Read it. You will enjoy it.
The day-to-day diary format was very effective. I enjoyed reading the book and got caught up in the series of setbacks all of the Swedish families had to overcome. I had previously read four of the Moberg books of the early Swedes, also immigrants to the mid-west. (The author gives credit to these books in her excellent listing of the sources of her stories,) Homesteading in the midst of the tall and deep-rooted prairie grass was especially slow, difficult and devoid of few happy times. Her listing of Swedish arrivals, marriages, births and deaths; and building of local communities over a 40 year period provides a history lesson for the later-on generations. These early settlers were heroes in every sense of the word.
Hailing from Kansas, I grew up on Laura Ingalls Wilder and other tales of the Prairie. The book filled in some gaps in my knowledge and was an interesting account of one woman's battle against the elements. I only wish there had been a little more emotion to the author's account. Otherwise, very good.
I loved reading Kajsa's story. Her struggles reflect how life was on the Kansas prairies in the 1800's. How sad that she went from really positive reports on raising the homestead, having babies until it was mostly diary items about a baby born, and a child or adult who died. That was part of what carved out our country. She listed each presidential election and who was the new man in office. A very nice time keeper.These folks were hardy and they lived life hard, but with their faith they were able to hang on and prosper. Loved the story. Highly recommend.
