The Four Noble Truths of Love: Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Relationships, by Susan Piver

Review

"Susan Piver brings together decades of wisdom and experience from both her Buddhist practice and her relationships. This book is direct, insightful and honest to its core. Using the lens of the Buddha's noble truths and the path of liberation, Susan presents a practical roadmap that can be accessed by anyone. I don't think a book quite like this has been written before. She is definitely a wise guide on what it truly means to love altogether and how compassion and insight can be mined from the ups and downs of everyday life and every connection. Susan presents the biggest view possible on what love can be--it's quite an invitation." --Josh Baran, author of The Tao of Now: Daily Wisdom from Mystics, Sages, Poets, and Saints "The Four Noble Truths of Love is like the book baby of the Buddha and Oprah Winfrey. It pulls no punches in the best of ways. Chock-full of relationship a-ha moments, it made me reflect not just on my marriage and how to keep deepening into it, but also on every loving relationship in my life. This wisdom may be thousands of years old, but Piver's ability to convey it with grace, humor, humility, and profound relevance to modern life is a true gift. Get it, read it, live it!" --Jonathan Fields, founder of Good Life Project"Susan Piver consistently offers what so many of us seek: A generous, caring, loving teacher, someone with an open heart and a clear mind, eager to help us find our own way forward." --Seth Godin, author of Linchpin "If you've ever felt that secret shame of not loving well or not managing to embody that perfect detached modern-day Buddha you know you're supposed to be, this is not only your book, it is your salvation. Susan's message, voice, and real world guidance show you the way out of the illusions and traps of relationship and into a level of freedom that is at once both profound and practical." --Christine Kane, founder and CEO of Uplevel You“One of the most exquisitely wise—and comforting—relationship books I've ever read. The Four Noble Truths of Love is a lighthouse for the beautiful, murky mess of intimacy; one of those keepers that you wear out and gift to every friend and say, ‘This will help.’ This book has permanent residency on my bedside table so I can keep coming back for Susan’s compassionate reminders: that we are inherently good and our capacity to love is indestructible.”  —Danielle LaPorte, author of The Desire Map and White Hot Truth"Susan Piver does far more than tell us how the Four Noble Truths apply to love, she lives that application with great depth and honesty, and lets us come along for the ride. Give your heart--and your capacity to do the toughest spiritual work of all, be in relationship--a gorgeous boost with this brilliant guide." --Jennifer Louden, author of The Woman's Comfort Book and The Life Organizer "Susan has combined three threads to give us a beautiful tapestry of spiritually conscious love: We find a clear and in-depth view of Buddhism. We see how it offers a path to intimate love. Susan uses her own relationship as an example of how it all comes together. This is a stand-out book for enriching love and closeness along the spiritual path." --David Richo, author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful Loving"This is the only book you need for your romantic relationship--it's just that good. Honest, wise, and raw, Susan will show you the four truths you need to actually make your relationship last." --Lodro Rinzler, author of Love Hurts: Buddhist Advice for the Heartbroken "Clear and heart-warming, this book is a guide to living relationships completely, with all their pleasures and other- wise. Susan Piver brought the four noble truths to life in her own marriage, and here shares the fullness of that experience. A wonderful read." --Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection

Nearly 2 years ago, I became single for the first time in over 15 years; leaving my second marriage after years of feeling stuck, unhappy, lost, and like I didn't know what's wrong with me or if love was even really available for me. I hate to admit it, but in the final few years of my last relationship, I had started to completely believe that being even a LITTLE bit happy in a relationship was not a 'real thing'. I viewed every relationship I encountered with mistrust, and assumed that both parties must be unhappy. As such, I was very bitter and also just deeply sad about love as a concept. It felt like an impossible dream.Fast forward until now, and I have spent the past several years actively studying, growing, learning, and facing into my own flaws and uncertainties as well as limiting beliefs in this area. It's been an interesting journey, and incredibly reward, however it wasn't until I read Susan's book on the Four Noble Truths of Love that I for the very first time understood that the 'end goal' is not some perfect and never disruptive situation with another human being.I can honestly say that my mind was expanded beyond what I believed possible with what Susan shares here, not only because it resonated and just felt RIGHT, but also because it allowed me to see that there's nothing wrong with me, when there are ups and downs and me being triggered or upset or feeling misunderstood in my current experience of love. I thought that everytime something felt like it wasn't working it meant I was wrong, or it was wrong! Now, I can see that it's about the dance. The ebb and the flow. And that even if things feel REALLY messed up, that doesn't mean it's not true love. It's not a reflection of me, OR my worth. This is just such a tiny part of what I've gained from this book. The tools, suggestions, explanations, and guidance in here are priceless, and I am about to start reading all over again already. If you've ever felt misunderstood in love, deeply sad or frustrated, 'not good enough', or ANGRY at why things aren't the way you want, or if you just want to understand how to give and receive love in a way that you can believe in - read this book.

Susan has written straight from her heart to ours. Using her own marriage and years of Buddhist learning/teaching/living, Susan shares her wisdom and experience to teach us about our own journey through love. If you're in an amazing relationship this book will very likely help you deepen it in ways you didn't realize possible. It has for mine. If you're in a crappy relationship this could help to make it better or make a graceful exit. Between relationships? You'll be so much better prepared for the next one. It's so practical, enlightening, funny and down-to-earth. Thank you again Susan. You just make the world easier to navigate.

Being in relationship with another person means conflict WILL arise. Fear, loss, loneliness, hurt, upset, expectations and unfulfilled dreams are a part of any relationship.Learning out how to avoid suffering in relationship while experiencing these discomforts is a specific application of general wisdom on how to reduce suffering in painful/stressful situations and the Buddha dharma is powerful teaching anyone can practice and implement. Piven has a lovely warm and challenging approach to applying Buddhist wisdom and practices in love relationships.Brilliant and practical.

In this book Susan lovingly guides us to turn towards the innate ups and downs of relationships and to find more ease and joy. It is not a "quick fix", as she offers no magic relationship tactic, it is a path to accepting what is the natural ebb and flow when two people chose to partner together. The book leads us to open up to appreciating it all, learning to manage our own triggers and to see that the very nature of partnerships can be messy and flawed and joyfully intimate in the many imperfections. Susan's keen understanding of The Four Noble Truths enables her to bring Buddha's teachings to us for our lives today and the result is a deeper understanding for how to live and how to love.Thank you Susan for sharing so much of yourself with all of us. Thank you for your time and energy and guidance. This book, coupled with a solid meditation practice (that I also learned from you!) has helped me to be a better partner, lover and friend. .

This is a fantastic book. I have read all of Susan’s books and find wisdom, humor, inspiration, and applicable tools in all she writes. This book tops them all! It is an elegant rendering of the Four Noble Truths to address the joys and sorrows of intimacy.I am a Buddhist oriented psychotherapist and am always on the lookout for books to recommend to my clients who are struggling with relationship issues. I am thrilled to be able to suggest this book to all my clients.Susan’s book goes far beyond the usual “how to” self-help guide - by inviting the reader to approach intimate relationships as a pathway to personal healing and wholeness.

This book is a must-read for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Whether you are single and looking for a partner or have been with someone for years, this book will offer lessons that will change how you approach relationships. Piver provides straightforward and easy to understand tactics to better understand your self, your motivations and inclinations, and those of your partner. Keeping her guidance in mind will - for the better - change the course of your relationships, romantic and otherwise.

Review

“A sensitive and sturdy work of environmental history. . . . [Davis] has a well-stocked mind, and frequently views the history of the Gulf through the prism of artists and writers including Winslow Homer, Wallace Stevens, Ernest Hemingway and John D. MacDonald. His prose is supple and clear. . . . A cri de coeur about the Gulf’s environmental ruin.” - Dwight Garner, New York Times“A wide-ranging, well-told story, by turns informative, lyrical, inspiring and chilling for anyone who cares about the future of ‘America’s Sea.’” - Gerard Helferich, Wall Street Journal“In the tradition of Jared Diamond's best-seller Collapse and Simon Winchester's Atlantic comes Jack E. Davis' nonfiction epic, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea, which strives both to celebrate and defend its subject―the Gulf of Mexico. . . . Detailed and exhaustive, written in lucid, impeccable prose, The Gulf is a fine work of information and insight, destined to be admired and cited.” - William J. Cobb, Dallas Morning News“Splendid . . . . Davis is a historian, and this book is packed with research, but The Gulf does not read like a textbook. He is a graceful, clear, often lyrical writer who makes sometimes surprising, always illuminating connections―it's not a stretch to compare him to John McPhee. And he is telling an important story, especially for those of us who live around what he calls the American Sea. What happens to it happens to us, and the more we know, the better equipped we'll be to deal with a future on its shores.” - Colette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times“An incisive, comprehensive and entertaining portrait of the world’s most diverse and productive marine ecosystems―from its lusty birth in the chaos of shifting continental plates to its slow and agonizing death of a million cuts inflicted by oil and gas extractors, dredge-and-fill operators, ‘condo-canyon’ developers, industrial-scale fishers, fertilizer-dependent farmers, chemical plant entrepreneurs, love-it-to-death snow birds and so many more. . . . Amid all of the pollution and exploitation, this could easily have been a grim history of ‘Paradise Lost.’ But in Davis’ skilled hands it as much love story as tragedy.” - Ron Cunningham, Gainesville Sun“Jack Davis has delivered a unique and illuminating history of the American Southern coast and sea as it should be written: how humanity and the environment evolved over ten millennia as a single system.” - Edward O. Wilson, author of The Social Conquest of Earth“This vast and well-told story shows how we made the Gulf of Mexico, in particular, into what local activists have begun to call a 'national sacrifice zone,' at enormous cost to its residents of all species. It’s a sobering tale, and one hopes that reading it will help us hit bottom and acknowledge the need to change.” - Bill McKibben, author Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet“A tremendous book. Davis is not only one of our preeminent environmental historians, but also a first-rate storyteller and prose stylist. Lay readers and scholars alike will be delighted by The Gulf, a lovely evocation of the natural world and the problematic ways our nation has profited from it.” - Blake Bailey, author of Cheever“The Gulf takes on troubling environmental issues with a lyrical voice and a steady appreciation of history.” - Mark Kurlansky, author of Paper: Paging Through History“Like its subject, The Gulf is big, beautiful, and beguiling. Meticulously researched and sparklingly written, it is also a cautionary tale about a paradise ill-served by humankind.” - William Souder, author of On a Farther Shore

I have just finished reading The Gulf, and found it completely engaging. It is an excellent lens through which to view U.S. environmental history. Though environmental history is by definition an expansive field, I doubt there are many researchers who have carried out the wide-ranging artistic, literary, sociological, scientific, and even medical research, to name but a few fields, that this author has drawn on to write the book.I downloaded the book on my Kindle thinking I would skim it lightly while spending some time on the Florida coast. I did not expect to read the chapters about the Gulf's creation and evolution, nor its early history. But once engaged I could not put the book down. The author’s prose flows beautifully, resulting in a refreshingly accessible book that is also very informative. In my view it is a tour de force.I hope it will be read widely, not only because it is so informative but also because it illuminates the environmental destruction that we as a society have allowed in the U.S. May it serve as a warning against future such acts and planning, and encourage conservation and respect for the land and natural resources that are ours to enjoy if we do the right thing.

I've lived on or near the GULF most of my life from Florida to Texas to Cancun Mexico. This book made me appreciate the GULF all the more from it's archeology to it's great staining by British Petroleum & Anadarko oil blowouts. I found the author fair and balanced in his perspectives, including the mixed blessings of OIL, but saddening me on what we've all lost. Just in my life time I've already seen the effects of orange grove fertilizer run off ruining the ecology of he lake I grew up on NON-SWIMABLE or fishable... To the bleached reefs & oil stains on my feet in Galveston beach. The book is a great mix of ecology, archeology, history and natural beauty to man made disaster. Sadly this book on THE GULF only covers the American Gulf coast. Much the GULF extends into Mexico, Central America & South America .. or is my geography over extended. Much of those Golf of Mexico coasts are NOT as despoiled …. YET.... I hope the future & global warming is kinder to the GULF than …….

My favorite history books are those which read like a story, with a well-developed set of characters, times, and places. And in my opinion, The Gulf is just that: a wonderful journey through the coasts of 5 U.S. states; through rivers, bays, estuaries, and Mangrove forests; through centuries of time. The dark side to this story is, of course, all of the human environmental damage which it exposes. This book should appeal to anyone who enjoys U.S. history, appreciates exquisitely crafted prose, and wants to learn more about the impacts that we have made on the natural world around us.[In the interest of full disclosure, I am a close personal friend of the author.]

Anyone who eats seafood, cares about dolphins, likes to breathe fresh air, and drink (and swim in) clean water should read this book, particularly those living in gulf states. History here plays the role of revealing the beauty and the abundance that have been lost in the Gulf of Mexico, all written in spritely style with fascinating portraits of persons living and dead, who participated, for good or for ill, in shaping the environment we have inherited.Although Davis holds out hope for this region, his book is nonetheless a catalog of spoliation, from the disappearance of native groups to the appearance of a "dead zone" of tens of thousands of square miles in what were once pristine, life-filled waters. This would make a good read for our ecologically challenged president.

As a geologist who was born in Key West more than 80 years ago I found This book full of interesting information about the Gulf of Mexico. The writing style is outstanding. For example how many fishermen know why they are called anglers? The chapter on Tarpon was mostly new to me. I thought I knew all about fishing. It's a wonder there are any birds left considering what the feather hunters (for womens hats) did before 1900. The effects of hurricanes, especially the Glaveston 1900 hurricane, that wiped out the island was horrifying (I have been there many times). I thought the writers attitude toward offshore drilling was a little severe. Nevertheless this is an outstanding book that was well researched.

I loved every page of this book. I learned so much about our Gulf’s history. But, even more important, I learned about how man’s efforts to create and protect our tourism and industry on the Gulf led to serious unintended consequences which threaten both industry and tourism.

I've lived by the gulf for most of my life and witnessed many of the things that the author wrote about. What a fascinating in-depth look at our very valuable natural resource. I highly recommend it to anyone familiar with the gulf coast.

very well written .The first 2/3rds of the book is history. The last 1/3rd is a blend of history and "reporting" on the overly cozy relatioins between states and their principal industries which leads to all manner of disgusting malfeasance but also illustrates how one or two tireless voices can be a potent force for justice. If you live in a gulf coast state this is MUST reading.

The paper of the book is cheap, an the quality is so so. I think that is important explain or have the especifications of the product

Muy buen libro

As a tween/teen in the late 80/early 90s, I took piano lessons, and my teacher let me use her copies of these books for sight-reading exercises. I have remembered them for all this time. I took harp lessons in college and bought a harp nearly 10 years ago. I wanted to work fingering exercises, and there are more books written for piano than harp, so I ordered this anthology to see if it would work. These books were everything that I remembered! And they have really helped my harp playing. I work each exercise that is feasible (some things on a piano are not doable on my harp...and some things that are simple on one instrument are much more advanced on the other due to different hand positions) until I can get it at 160bpm with a metronome. It has increased my finger dexterity and also my sight-reading ability for my harp.

I love the ease of the lessons. It’s simplified. Dislike they are all in one book and not 4 separate books

What a great tool to help with sight reading and basic piano skills! The accompanying music make these lessons fun to practice.Highly recommended!

These are just perfect for my young pianist to warm up, and having so many in one book is very nice!

This is a great set of books for the beginner.

Perfect for training. Great set and value.

Really easy to follow

Great
