If you grew up hunting, fishing, and camping this is worthless. If you don't know how to hunt or fish, it will be worse for you. (Lots of one sentence 5 star reviews makes me doubt these are legitimate reviews.) Who feels strongly enough about a book to write a review and then can only muster up one sentence? This book simply does not have enough detail for anyone. Each section is a few paragraphs. Here is the full advice on how to catch game birds without a gun:"grouse promise feasts for anybody lost in the wilderness, especially as a few stones or sticks are often the only weapons needed to catch one. If one misses the first time, such foul usually will afford a second or even third chance to be captured."Now you know that you can apparently kill a grouse by throwing a stone at it. I grew up hunting grouse and you won't see one until you flush it out and it is flying away. You could try 1000 times and still not hit one with a stone. Even if you could get within 10 feet of a stationary target like a rabbit, it's unlikely you could throw a stone hard enough and accurately enough to hit it.The section on snares is more useful, but again, lacking in useful detail.

Very dry humor. I'm not sure that I've learned anything in the skill department but I do enjoy reading this to people to make them laugh. Angier has a way with words that emits wit.

This book has everything every person who spends any time in the woods at all should have. I bought the paperback, no color photos, as a backup left in the camper. I bought the hard cover because it has color photographs and is a bit more updated while still staying true to its roots. I tore the hard cover off for less weight in the pack.

got this book for my wife who loves hiking in the woods with our 9 year old nephew and show him the different plants that are edible and explain about the different bugs and animals and such... this book should arm her with enough knowledge, hints, tips and tricks that Our nephew will think she is the best "survivalist" out there.. lol im just a touch upset that this isnt the version with the rubberized cover... lol Oh well, for $3.00 im not going to complain THAT much lol

The layout is really easy and neat to read. You don't have to read it in order. It's literally a guide, doesn't read like a book.

I've had a copy of this for many years, and I've replaced copies I've lost many times.Admittedly, I have yet to read it cover to cover, but I highly recommend it for campers, hikers, outdoors-persons, and even (and especially) prepers.

Before Cody Lundin, before Les Stroud, before Bear Grylls, there was the old school survival experts with the real world knowledge and backwoods experience. No flashy tv theatrics, just good simple usable stuff. The only downside is it presumes a level of skill that many lack. This book in paperback form has gone with me all over the world as my backup brain if I end up someplace I need the backwoods info.

I bought this 2001 hardcover copy of the book because I had checked out a copy of the 1998 paperback from the library, and I really wanted a copy for myself. The hardcover not only has an interesting textured cover, but features new illustrations by Jack Doherty. There is a new comprehensive (it's not all over the book) Edible Vegetation Identification Guide with detailed color pictures (compared to the simple line, black and white ones). The only reason I'm giving this item a 4 and not a 5 is because it's a great basic information book for living and surviving in the woods with a minimalist mind set, but is not an updated and fully comprehensive survival guide. I will say the hardcover is definitely worth it if you're going to get the book anyway.

This is a great book that I highly recommend to parents who have children with tics. As someone who was dissatisfied with the doctors' advice that "tics are hereditary, there's nothing you can do, take these drugs, go away" this book really helped me explore alternative ways to help my 6-year-old. (He did try clonodine and had bad side effects, so we stopped it after 11 days.) This book led us to a gluten-free/dairy-free diet, some testing that turned up high levels of yeast and bad gut bacteria, and a doctor accredited through the American Academy of Environmental Medicine who was able to tailor a plan to help him that included supplements and naturalistic approaches. We are very pleased with his progress 8 months after the purchase of this book. This book helped to narrow my focus and provided a place where lots of strategies are condensed and presented together instead of the yawning, overwhelming chasm of the entire internet!

This book has been helpful suggesting possible triggers for tics and TS. It also gave us new solutions to explore. What helped most was reading about other families who’ve nearly eliminated symptoms—that gives us so much hope! Tic disorder can feel overwhelming to kids. This book gave us encouragement that things can change. We are still in process of discovering triggers, but it’s nice having suggestions and encouragement along the way.

My 10yo started showing signs of Tourette's Syndrome and we got this book to get us started in some direction. I love that it's alternative and mostly non-medicated advice/guidance. If you need medication, just see a dr. If you want alternative options that are sometimes just as or even more effective - read this. We implemented several approaches outlined in this book and our son is doing AMAZING.

I am just getting started on this journey of learning about Tourette’s, and this was a great place to start. This book is well written and easy to read. I am now working to find a practitioner to help. I will consult the websites listed in the book and search on latitudes.org for more references. Many years ago we had success helping my older son with some behavioral issues by utilizing many of the approaches outlined in this book, namely removing gluten and using nystatin under the direction of a qualified practitioner (who has retired).

This book is a wonderful start for anyone who has a tic disorder or whose family member has a tic disorder. I think every person should listen to the advice in this book before turning to synthetics medications. It helped me identify my son's triggers and find ways of eliminating them. I would have liked some more detail in some areas, but I guess the book would have been twice its existing size. Still, it is a great buy which helped me understand this mysterious condition.

Still working through this book, but it is full of great information, and it is balanced. Over and over the author stresses that what works for one person may not work for another. So glad I found it and bought it.

my son who is 5 and extremely healthy started to exhibit extreme neck tics out of NO WHERE. looking back he did have a brief eye tic that went away for a few weeks the year before. However his neck and face tics came on fast and furious out of no where. my son has always been extremely well behaved, great concentration level, great socially and this really was scary. we took him to a neurologist and his pediatrician who were useless. said they knew nothing about tics (no one does in the medical community) and that they grow out of them and not much they can do. if it becomes severe they would then treat it with SERIOUS drugs (not anything i was going to do). i've always been interested in natural remedies and grew up on them. i read this book and it was FASCINATING to hear about how some of things these can be fixed with a simple diet. so that is what we tried first. i realized our son although a healthy eater ate way too much surgar and snacks - not enough real food. he had just started kindergarden and we packed his lunch - so he was getting a lot of snacky food. we cut down the snacks, sugar - - starting pushing more veggies and fruit and kale and greens. then put him on fish oil (1 tab and a half a day) and a supplement for kelp. we did see a naturopath and this was recommended. his face tics when away IMMEDIALTEY along with the neck. literally instead of doing a tic every 30 seconds all day long - he does one once a day or not at all. i did run out of fish oil as the brand i liked was on back order. he stopped and guess what - the tics came back. not as bad but just more often (more like five times a day). he's back on the fish oil and poof gone again. he still does them occasionally like maybe once a week or every other day - so we're going to see a allergist. but i SWEAR by this book. for all you nay sayers. JUST STOP! just try some simple recommendations and you will see it works. The medical community makes WAY TO MUCH MONEY off drugs so ofcourse they think this is all crap cause they have a lot to loose. drugs stop the symptoms not the underlying problem. these remedies and supplement get a the root cause. a TIC just means something is off - but i swear it can be fixed.

Great book. Great quality. Arrived promptly. This book is very informative and an easy read. I would recommend anyone who may have questions or wonder if someone they know nay have signs of torrets or tics.

I love the "In Death" series. I want to start by saying that. That said, this is one of the worst books in the series, it was sloppy and lazy. Names changed, at one point Peabody became an officer again, it's not difficult to check continuity but no one bothered. And yes, it's a cute quirk of Dallas' to get sayings wrong, it's even been discussed that she does it on purpose but NOT EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION. Once in a while was emphasis or quirk or whatever, but every single conversation with every single person just makes her look stupid and irritating. It's getting ridiculous and now means nothing where before it was a great way to subtly emphasize something.

JD Robb's books are always good. The futuristic angle is enough to make the story just a little different than what we consider normal, to give the plot a boost, and the storyline taking place in the future gives the outlandish aspect more believability than it otherwise would have. The characters and their motivations, however, are completely of the here and now. There's no need to reach for this stuff because most of it has happened at some point, somewhere already. It's a sad fact, that, but still true.Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke, being the central pair of the entire, long-running series, work well together as the primary love interest, and it doesn't get boring, even this far in. Despite everything we know about them, JD Robb still manages to find a small sliver of something new to sneak in about them. I love them both and like that we get into both their heads to learn how they think. And their unwavering love and devotion to one another is epic, in between their witty banter and sometimes snarky comments. Lieutenant Dallas' off-kilter quotes are also interesting in humorous ways. The other characters also get a lot of screen time, although to truly understand their connections and what they went through to get to where they are in this book, one has to read the earlier books to really comprehend the backstory. I love them all, but other than McNab and Peabody, all the rest ended up with cameos due to the need for legwork in tracking down the leads to find and apprehend the killer. As well as trying to figure out the connections and motives for the murders.Anyway, I'm glad to meet up with them all again, like catching up with old friends whom I haven't seen in a while. And now on to the next thrilling book!

I collect all JD Robb`s books, and this is one of my favorite books.Eve and Roarke make progress in the books, for example, Eve is getting treatment without much defense, not like in the first few books they have to argue about the medication a lot,and I think that`s a good sign because that means she actually consider Roarke`s feeling and make some concession. And they are looking forward to Thanksgiving that they are inviting Roarke`s family from Ireland to their mansion. It would be very sweet story I hope I will read that part in the next book.Without questioning, Roarke is as usual very useful in this book because the murderers is in the money world, and Roarke has the talent in numbers, and he really enjoys poking other company`s accounts, so his thinkings in the book is very interesting. He quite enjoying helping his wife`s case which is very sweet and romantic.Talking about the case, Eve`s job is very risky, she often got hurt during on duty and this book is not exception. In this book, she injured by catching a flying baby which the bad guy throw to make escape! She went down hard and hurt her tits and bottom. She don`t want Roarke worry too much, so she make many funny conversations about the progress, and that`s the highlight of this book.By the way, I like the map in the bottom, that is very hilarious image in my head. The dream about catching flying babies is also make me laugh! All in all, this is a easy book compare with delusion in death witch contain a lot of death.......so I am quite comfortable to read this book, and really enjoy it!!!

I'm still in love with the characters here, but parts of this felt more technical than really required. The story was still interesting and fun, but I usually I read every single word and here I found myself skipping sentences and paragraphs that were just too busy.Since there are so many other reviews with lots of points to them, I'll just leave it at this. Because if you've read this many, by now you already know whether or not you're going to buy the next J.D. Robb.

Review

"[Margolick] tells a story that is almost novelistic in its complexity. . . . Someday Elizabeth and Hazel will be a textbook. Long before, on the civil rights bookshelf, it will be considered a classic."—Jesse Kornbluth, Headbutler.com, Huffington Post"The remarkable story of a historic civil-rights photograph and the intertwined lives of its subjects."—The Daily Beast"A patient and evenhanded account of their messy relationship over the decades. . . . Margolick proposes no fairy-tale resolutions to such moral impasses. To his credit, he spares us none of the unruly facts as his subjects, still wrestling with history, wander off message."—Amy Finnerty, The New York Times Book Review"A patient and evenhanded account. . . . Margolick proposes no fairytale solutions. . . . To his credit, he spares us none of the unruly facts as his subjects, still wrestling with history, wander off message."—New York Times Book Review"Surprising, disturbing, occasionally inspiring, often baffling, and ultimately sad. . . . Elizabeth and Hazel represents, in microcosm, the debilitating power of race that remains powerful 50 years after that photo. . . . An amazing story, told with brio."—Boston Globe"Utterly engrossing, for it touches on a variety of thorny, provocative themes: the power of race, the nature of friendship, the role of personality, the capacity for brutality and for forgiveness."—Publishers Weekly"There are volumes of scholarly works on the Civil Rights Movement, but this book is different. By tracing the two women’s journeys, . . . often in their own words, Margolick artfully lays bare [their] emotional and mental wounds and struggles, [and] also places the women in the context of the wider civil rights era and beyond. . . . This work is simply a must-read."—Library Journal, starred review"A very nuanced analysis of how Elizabeth and Hazel were affected by the scene that made them famous . . . A complex look at two women at the center of a historic moment."—Booklist, starred review"Margolick’s unforgettable new book, Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock, takes as its touchstone a famous civil rights-era photograph. . . . eloquently chronicl[ing] their lives since that iconic photo was taken."—Kate Tuttle, TheAtlantic.com"Riveting reportage of an injustice that still resonates with sociological significance."—Kirkus Reviews"A marvelous example of bringing history to life through individual stories, . . . [and] a fascinating story of race, relationships, and the struggle to forgive."—Marjorie Kehe, Christian Science Monitor, "Fall Books: 20 Nonfiction Titles You Don’t Want to Miss""An amazingly intimate portrait. . . . The lesson of Elizabeth and Hazel may be that we shouldn’t define other people’s lives by one single moment. Instead, we can use their actions to define other lives—our own."—Christian Science Monitor"It is a story, beautifully told, of heroism – and, alas, it also an achingly painful account of the obstacles that stand in the way of racial reconciliation."—Glenn Altschuler, Florida Courier"Powerful and extraordinary. . . . Armed with a perceptive eye and a sensitive heart, Margolick brilliantly tells the story of Elizabeth and Hazel. He chronicles a key moment in American history and its complex aftermath, inserting readers into an intensely personal story of two women caught in history’s web."—Randy Dotinga, Christian Science Monitor"Engrossing . . . Elizabeth and Hazel serves to explode the simplifications of The Help and exposes the limits of apology and forgiveness. There is nothing about which to feel upbeat, no easy moral, no simple narrative. The story is a corrective to our collective fantasy that we can rectify the past."—Louis P. Masur, The Chronicle ReviewChristian Science Monitor, A Top 10 Nonfiction Book for 2011"The iconic image of Elizabeth and Hazel at age fifteen showed us the terrible burden that nine young Americans had to shoulder to claim our nation's promise of equal opportunity. The pain it caused was deeply personal. David Margolick now tells us the amazing story of how Elizabeth and Hazel, as adults, struggled to find each other across the racial divide and in so doing, end their pain and find a measure of peace. We all need to know about Elizabeth and Hazel."—President Bill Clinton"David Margolick's dual biography of an iconic photograph is a narrative tour de force that leaves us to grapple with a disturbing perennial—that forgiveness doesn't always follow from understanding. I read Elizabeth and Hazel straight through in one sitting."—David Levering Lewis, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of W. E. B. Du Bois"The iconic photograph of Hazel Bryan and Elizabeth Eckford has now riveted us for more than fifty years. David Margolick's effort to bring the photo to life is equally riveting. It makes for a deeply compelling story of race and our ongoing efforts at understanding."—Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus, NAACP"Elizabeth and Hazel is a story that has been crying out to be told ever since two teenaged girls stumbled into history on a street in Little Rock, more than a half-century ago. David Margolick has done so masterfully, in a narrative so gripping that one has difficulty putting down his book before arriving at the last page. And as I plumbed the depths of his narrative, I found it at once painful, as well as elevating, and unlike anything I’ve ever read on the subject. It should be required reading for a nation still struggling with what Margolick refers to as ‘the thicket of race.’”—Charlayne Hunter-Gault, author of In My Place (Charlayne Hunter-Gault)"Surprising, disturbing, occasionally inspiring, often baffling, and ultimately sad. . . . Elizabeth and Hazel raises the specter that some damage doesn’t heal. It is a notion profoundly unsettling to the story we Americans tell about ourselves."—Karen R. Long, Cleveland Plain-Dealer (Karen R. Long Cleveland Plain-Dealer)"Intricately woven and deeply affecting. . . . [Margolick's] choice to broaden and complicate the narrative - to include the larger minefield of race matters and honest discourse - is what makes this book salient, not sentimental. Elizabeth and Hazel's winding, rocky relationship, then, is a much more fitting and accurate metaphor for the country; this book, an attempt at a different, lasting after-image - this time in words."—Lynell George, Los Angeles Times (Lynell George Los Angeles Times)"Judicious and bittersweet. . . . Margolick excels at framing the intimate details of each woman's life with a half-century of social and cultural upheaval....The deeper motives and psyches of the protagonists remain as elusive as any resolution to their story—and, perhaps, just as tangled. Nonfiction, as with photographs, can only do so much—though in Elizabeth and Hazel, it does more than enough."—Gene Seymour, Newsday (Gene Seymour Newsday)

The famous (infamous)? photo of September 4, 1957, of Hazel Bryan taunting Elizabeth Eckford on their way to attend the first day of school at Little Rock Central High School will always remain a fixture regarding the civil rights era. We now have the history behind the photo and the two principals in it.The two women reconciled over the unfortunate incident, and even became fast friends. However, over a period of time as they attended functions regarding the incident each felt they became used by those they felt were trying to capitalize on the photo. Each of the women had tough going during their adult years, and now they no longer see one another even though they live close by.You can see on the dust jacket of the book the photo of the two adult women is split apart indicating something is still amiss between the two of them. The important thing is that forgiveness was asked by Hazel Bryan and granted to her by Elizabeth Eckford, and even though they no longer see one another the chasm that existed between them is now narrowed to some degree. Perhaps one day they will once again become the friends they once were. I believe the main lesson to be learned here is that we need to be careful how we treat one another, because how we treat another individual will always be remembered by them. If we are to be remembered by another let's be sure it is for something good.

I read "Elizabeth and Hazel" last Friday in one sitting and found it to be an honest and highly compelling portrayal of both Little Rock Nine member, Elizabeth Eckford, and her iconic tormentor, Hazel Massery, in the years since the Little Rock desegregation crisis, a warts and all representation of the history.Margolick seemed particularly insightful in his analysis of how the Little Rock public was eager to cash in on their 1997 reconciliation, but which then made Massery vulnerable as the apology scape-goat of the entire community. You read this book hoping for a happy ending, but perhaps it is a more accurate reflection of the state of current American race relations that one is not forthcoming. It's quite amazing that Eckford and Massery they gave author David Margolick permission to write so candidly about such a presently painful subject for them. I also loved the chapter on Louis Armstrong and the "lathered-up" photo. My only small complaint is an academic one - I wished there were more extensive footnotes and a bibliography at the end.

is not always an option, even after 50 years. David Margolik's study of one of American history's most iconic photographs, taken during the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School, reunites the two women in picture, Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan. Eckford, the 15 year old black girl who was carefully chosen by civil rights leaders in 1957 to be one of nine black students to first integrate the school. She is pictured enduring a gauntlet of screaming whites as she tries to walk towards the school. Her main tormenter, also a 15 year old girl, the white Bryan, is immortalised as a swearing, hateful figure right behind her. Several photographers were present and all took pictures of that moment in history. But history didn't end after the snapshot was taken. Both Eckford and Bryan went through life changes as they moved from the people they had been in 1957 to older, more mature women. Bryan, who transferred away from Little Rock Central, married young and began to look at herself and reconsider her core beliefs. Eckford, who stayed a year or so at the high school, was scarred by her time in the spotlight as one of the "Little Rock Nine". Determined later to be suffering from a form of PTSD from those traumatic days, combined with a depressive nature, Eckford rather drifted through life as a loner, holding jobs and raising two sons, and coming out occasionally to tell the history of the desegregation of the high school. Bryan also was a loner, despite having an active family life, and a few years after the incident at the high school, she called Eckford and apologised for her hateful actions. The years passed and Hazel Bryan became a "searcher" for her role in life. She and Elizabeth Eckford got together and actually became friends for a while, working together on race relation workshops. They traveled around together telling "their story", how the victim and the tormenter were able to bond and heal their wounds. But were they really able do that? Certainly Eckford was suspicious of Bryan's "conversion" and of her "apology". Was it sincere? It seemed to me - the reader - that Hazel Bryan truly did have a life changing journey, but I am not Elizabeth Eckford and I did not suffer the indignities she did.David Margolick looks at both Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan and examines both their lives and the milieu both came from. Fifty years after "Little Rock" the wounds haven't healed completely. Margolick's book is a very good picture of a famous snapshot.
