Review

“Show[s], in stunning visual terms, mankind’s universal desire to cross the threshold of death and continue a meaningful relationship with those who have departed.” - Heavy Metal“Memento Mori is led by the visuals: spellbinding images of decorated skulls, elaborate burials, and other death-related customs from around the world.” - Vice.com“10 Best New Photography Books of Spring 2015” - American Photo“Visually stunning . . . documents how different cultures around the world from Ethiopia to Rwanda to Nepal honor their dead.” - OnMilwaukee.com“Skull after painted or bejeweled skull relays a story that’s as much about life as it is about death. . . . There’s something intangible here ― how ‘memento mori,’ literally meaning ‘remember that you will die,’ isn't always a looming threat, and tangible human remains can evoke love and respect for life.” - Hyperallergic“Some of the most jaw-dropping imagery you’ll ever encounter.” - Rue Morgue“Part history lesson, and part documentary. . . . This is a fascinating book that points out the evolution of the perception of death and the dead in various cultures.” - Portland Book Review“Paul Koudounaris aims his lens at cultures where the dead play key roles in the lives of the living―as in a Bolivian festival where skulls are strewn with flower petals, or on Indonesian islands where the mummies of deceased family members are kept at home and given a place at the table, both literally and figuratively.” - Smithsonian.com“Koudounaris is a skilled photographer, as the 500+ pictures in this oversized book attest, but even more so, he's a skilled and sensitive historian, who brings an anthropologist's empathy to the task of documenting and framing the varied practices depicted in the book. . . . Oversized with an embossed cover and spine, Memento Mori sports outstanding color prints and beautiful design.” - Boing Boing“Compelling essays explain how life is celebrated by honoring the physical remnants of the body. Some may find the topic morbid, but the images are undeniably beautiful, haunting, and visually striking. The book’s cross-cultural approach portrays death as a transition, rather than an ‘irreversible and impenetrable’ border. Recommended for readers who are both fascinated with the macabre and comfortable with their own mortality.” - Library Journal

At first I was a bit put off by the rather bland looking cover, thinking this may be just a knock-off to keep the money coming. I was very happily incorrect - the book itself is absolutely gorgeous, with a shiny, satin-like cloth cover printed with gold foil lettering. This addition to Mr. Koundounaris' amazing previous offerings is, believe me, BETTER and more morbidly gorgeous than his other works. Don't hesitate to purchase this amazing photographic journey into the world of death's memorials, with a great deal of interesting and informative text to accompany the stunning pictures. Plus, the entire concept is treated with dignity and utmost respect - no gore or dismal, bleak photos of abandoned cemeteries. A truly breathtaking walk through histories attempts to memorialize the otherwise forgotten dead..."As You Are, They Were. As They Are, You Will Be."

This is my third book by Paul Koudounaris, and he does not disappoint (as long as you're into mummies, skeletons, burial customs, etc.). So many fascinating insights into cultures that are foreign to me; fantastic pictures; I can't find anything I don't like about this book.

Coffee Table Book? Scholarly, Textbook? Amazingly it can be BOTH!Koudounaris has this subject so well showcased in his 3rd book. Very VERY nice. Aesthetically, the cover is a very exquisite blue shiny fabric - silk like. He has such a great way of photographing the subjects. Disarmingly beautiful and respectful of the subjects. He obviously knows the subject matter and history, has done impeccable research. Kudos Mr. K.

It's ok. It's big and an odd size. The flowery-scripty font makes it difficult to read and the way it's laid out is awkward. Giant page-filling font with small photos on one spread and several photos with a different font on the next. Looks pretty - nicely bound, good paper - but it's still just not worth the price.

This is book is impressive. Just like the other two titles of Koudounaris in the same area, the photographs displayed are breath taking. This book is larger in trimming dimenssions than previous titles, however, there is less word count on this one. I believe images have a main role on this title, and they serve the propose.I found a great interest in relating the European traditions previously displayed to similar practices in other parts of the globe. This book is beautiful, design was right on point and the visuals aspects are just one of a kind. I am still intested in learning more about the topic.

Gorgeous photography and interesting text. Clearly the author has a passion for the subject matter and it is evident in the spectacular photographs and text he has included in this volume. Plus, the cover has a great look and interesting texture and the pages are printed on quality paper - perhaps to increase its "coffee-table" appeal?

Lovely book with a decadent feel to the cover because of satin-like finish and embossing. The pictures are wonderful. My goth, dead adoring roommate shouted 'Yoink!' when it entered the house and it reappeared on my desk a week later. I'm taking that as a sign of approval.

I picked this up on a whim after Caitlin Doughty showed it on her 'Ask a Mortician' channel. I will say I'm very happy, and quite impressed. I love unique coffee table books. This goes great along side my Codex Seraphinianus.

Making Movies, by Sidney Lumet

Amazon.com Review

It's well known that a vast number of people work on any given movie in roles as varied as writing scripts, choosing locations, dressing sets, costuming the players, lighting scenes, manipulating the camera, directing actors, editing film, working on sound, advertising the finished product, and screening it to an audience. Have you ever thought about how these components are collated? Or why the director is most often considered the author of a film? Wonder no more, because Sidney Lumet's Making Movies is a terrific journey through each stage of filmmaking that is overseen by the director. Lumet, the veteran director of Twelve Angry Men, The Pawnbroker, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, The Verdict, and many other fine movies, knows the ins and outs of American filmmaking as well as anyone. In this excellent, personable account, Lumet tells what he's learned about making movies in the course of the last 40 years. He shows why fine directors need to have strong imaginations, extraordinary adaptability, and skill in many different fields. His enthusiasm for his life's work, particularly his love of actors, is evident on every page of this book. As Herculean as the labors of film directing are, Lumet takes great pleasure in his work, almost guiltily admitting that the film director's job is "the best in the world."

MAKING MOVIES is an informative and quick read, in which the celebrated director of such gems as TWELVE ANGRY MEN, THE PAWNBROKER, SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON and NETWORK takes us through all the phases of moviemaking, from choosing the director and script through making the movie to postproduction and release. Lumet promises us at this book's outset that he won't offer celebrity gossip, and he doesn't. What the reader will find is enormous insight into the craft of filmmaking, right down to actual callsheets and the director's exhausting schedule. Highly recommended for anyone curious about why movies are made, how they're made and what happens upon their release.

"Making Movies" is one of the best books on the nuts and bolts of film-making ever. It deserves the highest rating simply because it is both well presented and full of practical insights. Lumet is brilliant on the psychology of movie-making in the old days, for instance, when each producer had the power to order cuts at will. The director who knew this would deliberately leave some weak scenes in during early screenings so that the producers could order them removed and thus later claim to have "saved" the picture – if, that is, it turned out to be a hit. That said, Lumet's overall approach is not historical but topical, from selecting a writer to making the final cut. In Chapter Three, he raises a point I often try to impress upon my students: The way you tell a story should relate somehow to what that story is about. That gets to the whole question of the importance of style, which he terms "the most misused word since love." (pg. 49) Good, practical advice can be found on every page. Here's how he can tell if something is off when watching a scene during rushes: "If my concentration breaks, something is wrong." (pg. 141) This, I might add, applies equally well to reading as to watching – if our attention drifts, there may be something wrong with the book we are reading, or the text of the speech we are delivering. Here's something that may seem counter-intuitive: The audience's perception of the length of a film depends not on the tempo of the movie itself so much as the presence or absence of changes in tempo. The fewer the changes, even if the tempo is fast, the longer the movie will seem. Most melodramas accelerate speed towards the end. Inexperienced directors adopt an up-tempo from the start, then believe they have left themselves nowhere to go except even faster, thus exhausting the audience long before the final credits. Lumet candidly confesses he doesn't know what makes a hit, and doubts that anyone really does. It is certainly not the stars alone. He talks about those he has worked with (including Paul Newman and Al Pacino) without indulging in gossip, and when he has something negative to say, he does so without naming names. One movie of his, which he refuses to identify, suffered from the limited range of one of its stars. "On the second day of shooting, I began to realize that the leading actress lacked the tenderness her part called for. She simply didn't have it in her as an actress or a person. She was superb with anger; she had humor. But if she was asked to show the simplest affection for the person playing opposite her, a falseness crept into her acting that was readily apparent, particularly since her acting was otherwise so real and true…. Since the movie was fundamentally a love story, I knew that we were in trouble." (pp. 143-144) I wonder if the movie in question might not have been "The Morning After." The only hint he provides is that the film "had three very high-powered stars in it." "Morning After" featured Jane Fonda, Jeff Bridges and Raul Julia. On the other hand, Fonda did receive an Oscar nomination for her performance here, so I can't be certain. Though most (but not all) of the examples are taken from movies he himself directed, the book is most definitely not a survey of his career. While "Murder on the Orient Express," for example, gets mentioned at least a dozen times, "Fail Safe" rates only a single one, early on. Incidentally, what he has to say about "Murder…" gives me a higher opinion of that movie than I ever had before; now I am tempted go back and take another look at it. The chapter on the "lens plot" in "12 Angry Men" – how he used differing lenses to create an increasing sense of claustrophobia – is justly famous. On the whole, Making Movies is an enlightening introduction to the craft, presented by an insider. If you are like me, you will be amazed at what you hadn't noticed in movies you thought you knew. For a longer version of this review, please go to hamiltonbeck dot wordpress dot com

Having lived in L.A. for 20 years and having been raised to despise the film industry, I didn't expect to learn from or like this book. I was very surprised to find so much to admire and wonder at: Lumet's work, his creative process, the clarity of his goals and how he meticulously works to meet those goals, and the logic behind all the expensive, difficult, tedious processes that go into making a movie. This vivid, engaging book was recommended to me by Dianne Durante, an art critic on Patreon (I recommend her recommendations).

After reading almost countless books on the subject of making films, Sidney Lumet's humble treatise on how he does it is almost 95% meat and 2% fat (the remainder is, IMHO, the title page and the covers). It's surprisingly simple stuff about how he goes about his process using a method culled from years of experience and training from others before him, as well as his television experience in the 50s. And yet, despite his tact and simplicity, the details he gives can probably shave weeks and months off of a production in terms of helping one consider what is important, what is not, and how to organize your people. Most useful, though, is how he describes the process of dividing your crew into units and then how to schedule and task them in the most efficacious and satisfying way. He also gives a rare glimpse into the process of test audiences and how they work, practically blow by blow.Although the information pre-dates the digital era (printed 1995), almost everything in it still applies today as it's more about production process than the actual technology (although there is some of that too). In short, this book is a brisk and valuable read, and I will never sell my copy.

Sidney Lumet's "Making Movies" is a wonderful insight into the director's role in the filmmaking process. The entire book reads like Lumet has sat you down to tell you a story. We get a chance to peer into his mind as he makes small but critical choices throughout the Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production phases in the movie's life. Lumet gives many clear and specific examples of moments in his career where he had to overcome the odds to get the shot or performance that the film called for. This book is great for the aspiring filmmaker and seasoned industry veteran alike.I knocked off 1 star only because some of the technical processes of filmmaking described in the book are no longer used, and it made the book feel very dated. The writing is still great and it's nice to hear about how films used to be made. The techniques of working with actors still hold up, as well as the detailed descriptions of the director's role within the larger company of talent and executives.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to advance their cinema education and gain deep appreciation for the art form.

The story line was good since I did not really know about the Arias trial. But his constant reference to the DeVault trial that he was a jury on kind of ruined or at least dampened my liking of this book. If I wanted to read about the DeVault trial, I would of bought his first book Brain Damage. When this jury went into their deliberation, I had to skip over several pages because he made me feel like I was reading the book about the DeVault trial. I felt that way because his telling us readers what was being said and the things being done in the DeVault jury deliberation. I also his constant use of the word One such in One should not, or One should... He could use the word you or people instead of his over use of the word One. As for his letter to Travis Alexander at the end was very weird and confusing for me. The book could of done without that letter. Overall this author can become a very good writer in time if he just stick to the trial he is writing about and not about the one he served on. Hopefully his 4th book will be better book to read. And I will buy it and read it.

I want to preface this review by stating I watch every minute of both Jodi Arias trials. That might be why I found this book drawn out, repetitive and tedious at times.I understand it's suppose to be written from a juror's point of view. For me there was too much repetitive information about jurors general basic thoughts. The author did capture the personalities and mannerisms of the attorneys to a T. The same is true of the evil waste of space on trial. The parts of the book that described the actual court proceedures and testimony I found very accurate and compelling. The "hired guns" the defense brought in were as ineffective and down right stupid as described. Dr. DeMarte was as intelligent, professional and knowledgable as described. The defense attorneys were such slimeballs there is no way to describe them accurately. They had to be seen to be believed. The defense table was occupied by demons.I admit I fell a little bit in love with Jaun Martinez while watching his mastery of the court room. This book reminded me why. He has a gift and passion for what he does. The reader gets a good picture of someone who is a crusader for victims and their families. His brilliance comes through in the writers descriptions.I don't think the book yet answers "why not kill her." I would have liked to know more of the ARIAS jury's thoughts and comments. I've understood since the end of the trial it was one juror who refused to vote for death. But why? That question still needs to be answered.I was against the death penalty for a long time. THIS CASE and the Chesire, Connecticut home invasion case convinced me that some people are pure evil and it's warranted. This book backs that opinion up.The thing this author did best was humanize the victim. He portrayed Travis Alexander as the successful, warm, kind, loving and giving human being he was. He layed the lies and character assination at the feet of the defense and their client who is one of the most evil human beings I've ever seen.I would recommend this book to anyone who followed this trial.

Dear Paul Sanders:We have spoken via Twitter, in the past, back when this case was going on, and I am amazingly pleased with your work.I found it quite insightful, and this book was a wonderful companion to me during heavy traffic days, when the audiobook seriously saved me from my own road rage. I loved the way that you compared your experiences at the MDV trial, and applied those views to the trial of this other monster. Coincidentally, I became a juror myself in a pretty ugly case prior to purchasing your book and, as a result, became enthralled reading about your opinion of how the system works. It is true that those of us who believe in the system, and want justice served, find ourselves -like you say- in awe of the "enormity of the position that we are put in." Thanks for showing your passion and thank the higher power that you lived a life that allowed you to express yourself, say your peace, and call out what you believe in. Few people have ever been gifted with such a wonderful opportunity. Good luck on your next endeavors!- Michelle

This is a hefty book. A day-to-day chronicle of the death penalty re-trial of Arias. I had thought that the author was a juror for this trial, but found that he was a juror for a completely different case, and in this instance, he was a court observer. Slightly misleading. The effort is earnest, though there is much repetition and several typos. This book takes you into the courtroom. The psychological testimony regarding Borderline Personality Disorder was interesting, though disturbing. This was tragic murder, and a cautionary tale about who we allow into our lives.

I really enjoyed reading this book. A former juror recaps the sentencing portion of Jodi Arias' trial from his perspective as a trial watcher. My personal opinion is that the book would've been much better had the author refrained from making so many references to his experience as a juror on a different trial. It took away from the overall story, and I ended up skipping over those pages. If not for that, I would've definitely given 5 stars.

About the Author

"He was not of an age, but for all time," declared Ben Jonson of his contemporary William Shakespeare (1564–1616). Jonson's praise is especially prescient, since at the turn of the 17th century Shakespeare was but one of many popular London playwrights and none of his dramas were printed in his lifetime. The reason so many of his works survive is because two of his actor friends, with the assistance of Jonson, assembled and published the First Folio edition of 1623.

Nice translations of the Greek classics. Excellent value.

Needed one of these plays for a class I took and ended up reading them all. Such a great collection of Greek tragedy!

FOR WHAT IT IS IT IS ACCEPTABLE. THE PRICE FOR A PAPERBACK SEEMED HIGH TO ME; I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED A HARDBACK. BUT FOR READING AND REFERENCE, IT IS ACCEPTABLE.

I ordered this product for a college class. It was in great condition, covered exactly what it said it would and for the tragedies you get it is well worth the money.

this year i decided to order my books from on line and save, oh i don't know, about 200.00 dollars, i needed this specific book, saw that it was readily available and affordable...so tah-dah..i ordered it and i received it just in time for school...
