Really enjoyed this book. Mary and Luke sure had a rocky relationship. I fell in love with Amy she made reading this book fun exciting and I couldn't wait to see if she was going to get her Christmas wish. You need to read this book to find out what happens. I can't wait until the next blook in the series comes out.

Set in Atlanta around the holidays, this romance is well-written and well-edited. The pace of the romance between Luke and Mary is executed well, as well. The persistence of Luke in wearing down the fears of Mary is touching, and the resolution of Mary’s fears is satisfying. Recommended.

This was a beautiful story perfect for the Christmas season! It’s a clean romance which is so rare these days! I loved the character development of Mary. I watched her grow throughout the book. It was lovely to experience! I highly recommend this book!

Darling story - I loved this book so much - the romance felt real and believable and really nailed the slow burn. My fav were all the cute and witty conversations in person and through text that had me smiling through every page. I don’t say this very often but I’d go back and read this one again!

I loved this romance! Right from the get go I fell in love with Mary. You will see what I mean... and Luke. What. A. Hottie. A clean but still exciting romance with a great touch of Christmas spirit!

I loved everything about this story! The characters are delightful. It is a wonderful Christmas story.

Loved this story with it's adorable characters and heart-warming message!

I absolutely loved this book. The characters were well developed. I couldn't put it down. I read this book in two days.

I read this for one of my seminary classes, and though it is short and simple, the meaning is profound. It's structured into three sections which are very applicable to any one studying ministry or actively in ministry. It's refreshing and a great reminder of God's promise to shepherds. Overall, it was very humbling to read to this. I recommend it to any religion or seminary student as well as pastor or church leadership. One thing though...I do wish it was a bit longer and would go into depth in certain areas. Regardless, understanding that it was written many years ago, the application stands.

This is on my very short list of Christian classics, along with the works of Brennan Manning (who I also strongly recommend). This book shows us, even though it is very brief, that heaven appears in unexpected places and that some of the ways we define power and success need massive redefinition.A beautiful book from a very human writer who paints faith as an everyday, reachable reality.

Henri Nouwen is one of my favorite authors which is evident in him being the most represented author in my library. I love his extraordinary ability to write about deep theological issues in relatively simple and relatable terms. A skill he probably acquired working many years in the academe teaching at prestigious schools such as Harvard and Yale and then later serving at the L'Arche community of Daybreak. When I saw that he had written In the Name of Jesus, a book specifically on Christian leadership, I could not wait to read it. Like most of Nouwen's works, it took me less than a day to read it but it is a book I will not forget. The book is a response to a simple question: what will Christian leadership need in the twenty-first century? Though written nearly 25 years ago, Nouwen's words still endure today. As recorded in Matthew 4, after spending forty days in the desert Jesus was tempted three times. Nouwen walks us through each of these temptations and how they are relevant in our Christian leaders today.Anyone who wants to serve in a ministry environment or serve in any industry with a Christ-like attitude will benefit greatly from this book.I am a big fan of quotes and my favorite quote from this book: "The mystery of ministry is that we have been chosen to make our own limited and very conditional love the gateway for the unlimited and unconditional love of God."

In this book, Nouwen describes what he believes the key characteristics of a Christian leader are. These characteristics are guided by two stories for the Gospels: the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11) and the story of Peter's call to be a shepherd (John 21:15-19). These characteristics are being prayerful rather than relevant, ministerial rather than popular, and being led rather than being a leader.Nouwen first explains that the temptation of today's ministers is to be relevant. Nouwen says that Jesus also had this same temptation. When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert, the first temptation was to turn stones into bread. With so many people in the world dieing of starvation, we all wish at times that we had the power to turn stones into bread. However, when Jesus was asked to perform the relevant behavior of changing stones into bread, he stuck to his mission to proclaim the Word and said, "One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).Rather than trying to be relevant to the world, a Christian leader should use Jesus as the source of their words, advice and guidance. It is through the discipline of contemplative prayer that Christian leaders can do that. It is not enough for Christian leaders to be moral people, well trained, eager to help their fellow humans, and able to respond creatively to the burning issues of their time. Christian leaders must truly be men and women of God, people with an ardent desire to dwell in God's presence, to listen to God's voice, to look at God's beauty, to touch God's incarnate Word, and to taste fully God's infinite goodness. The second temptation Nouwen says Christian leaders must avoid is the temptation to be spectacular. This was also Jesus' second temptation in the desert. "Throw yourself from the parapet of the temple and let the angels catch you and carry you in their arms" (Matthew 4:6). Jesus would not do it. He refused to be a stunt man to prove that he had something worthwhile to say. In stead Jesus said "Don't put the Lord your God to the test."Nouwen says that in today's church, individualism among ministers and priests is prevalent. Many do not have many skills to be proud of, but they still frequently feel that, if they have anything at all to show, it is something they must do solo. However, Nouwen says that ministry is not done solo, but in pairs. In Mark 6:7 Jesus sent the discipline out two by two to conquer evil. We cannot preach the Gospel on our own, we are called to share the Gospel together, in community.Nouwen goes on to say that ministry is also mutual. Jesus said, "I am the god shepherd. I know by own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep" (John 10:14-15). Ministers have gotten the idea that good leadership means keeping a safe distance form those we lead. However, when the members of a community cannot truly know and love their shepherd, shepherding just becomes a subtle way to exercise power over others.Nouwen says that the only way to for us to over come this temptation is confession and forgiveness. This does not mean that ministers should bring their own sins into the pulpit. It means that ministers are called to minister with their whole being, including their wounded selves. The third temptation today's Christian leaders must overcome is the temptation of power. When the devil said to Jesus "All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus replied "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only" (Matthew 4:9-10). Others say that having power - provided it is used in the service of God and your fellow human beings - is a good thing. Nouwen says that it was this rationalization that caused crusades, inquisitions, and the enslavement of Indians. He says it seems easier to be God than to love God, and easier to control people than to love people.Nouwen says that a common misconception among Christian leaders is that the older and more mature you get then more capable you become as a leader. However, John 21:18 says, "I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." Nouwen says that the most important quality of Christian leadership is not a leadership of power and control, but a leadership of powerlessness and humility. Powerlessness and humility in the spiritual life refer to people who are so deeply in love with Jesus that they are ready to follow him wherever he guides them, always trusting that, with him, they will find life and fine it abundantly.Nouwen says that the way to discern where we are being led by Jesus is through theological reflection. Theological reflection is thinking with the mind of Christ. The Christian leaders of the future have to be theologians, persons who know the heart of God and are trained - through prayer, study, and careful analysis - to manifest the divine event of God's saving work in the midst of the many seemingly random events of their time.

Sorry, but I think it’s not well thought out to sell a kindle I-Ching book, for $17 that doesn’t hyperlink in the contents to the individual hexagrams. One always has to start at the first hexagram and use the pagination slider on the bottom of the page to guess your way to the hexagram your looking for? That’s quite poor. This review is for the Shambhala Taoist I-Ching, I know how reviews on Amazon can find their ways into other books. Even though they should have already known my guess is Shambhala would do a fix/update if it was brought to their attention.

This version of the I Ching could be the only book you may ever require to understand what the primordial foundations of your life actually are. As much as an alchemical cookbook as it is a wisdom tradition classic. You can use this book for the rest of your life to understand the deeper realms of your experience. Don't miss it. Im not kidding.

This book is quite different from what I expected. It is an interpretation of the I Ching written by a Taoist meditation master. It is filled with technical Taoist terminology which will be difficult for the average person to understand. Thomas Cleary has written an excellent Introduction explaining some of the terminology and historical background. To an experienced Taoist meditator, one who has mastered the meditational terms, this book will speak directly. For myself, this book will be an occasional backup to the well known Wilhelm / Baynes translation.

Liu I-Ming's treatise on the I Ching is well worth reading if you are interested in Taoism generally and/or its spiritual-alchemy tradition specifically. One thing to bear in mind is that his commentary is not, in my opinion anyway, all that suited to the more random divinatory approach that many look to the I Ching for. Instead, it is Liu's case for seeing the I Ching as a system that might advise one on his/her Taoist-alchemical path. For example, he reads the hexagrams in a narrative sequence, and the lines within the hexagrams in sequence as well. In his system, then, it seems to me, it wouldn't make much sense to read any line randomly, as one might in strict divination practice, since you would therefore lose the context of his commentary on that line. It's not about randomness for Liu, but rather seeing the whole I Ching as one system. And, given that it's a particular system, it helps to have some prior knowledge of the alchemical "language" (though translator Cleary provides a good introduction explaining it). If you have no interest in Taoist alchemy, it's probably not the book for you. While some information is given on "consulting" it as an oracle, as aforementioned it almost doesn't make sense to do so this way.In regard to Liu's alchemical system, it is similar to his commentary on Chang Po-Tuan's 'Understanding Reality' (also translated by Cleary) -- one seeks to balance yin and yang, leading to a firing process that eventually allows the golden elixir to crystallize. As usual with Taoist alchemical texts, Liu stops just short of giving you the actual secret to doing all this -- instead, you are directed to find a teacher who will give you the oral instructions. That's great, if you're able to find one. If not, you may be out of luck, as Liu specifically warns against individual guesswork. Interestingly, he also attacks those who vaunt the circulation of energy as the secret: on p. 228 he witheringly refers to "Excess in being ignorant and acting arbitrarily, listening to blind teachers, striving for elevation by conveying the energy up to boost the brain, or conveying the energy up into the head, or keeping the thought on the point between the brows. . . " -- so if you thought the "microcosmic orbit" was what it was all about, Liu would seem to suggest you're wrong. And he was indeed one of the foremost commentators on spiritual alchemy. He also attacks excess in meditation (i.e to the point of "quietism", though not all meditation itself). Oftentimes, this book seems to be more about balance in life, which is something seemingly within reach. Yet, tantalizingly, there seems to be some further secret that always remains unavailable to those uninitiated with by private oral instructions.Well, whatever about all that, this book is well worth reading, will challenge you, and make you work hard (at least mentally). But if you just want an easy oracle that tells you what you should do in some given situation, go with the old Wilheml/Baynes.

Having read many translations & owning about 8, I always find myself returning to this one. Each translation I own has a place, and It can be valuable to compare different takes on a hexagram. But when I want what I feel is a more pure voice, in line with my Taoist sensibilities, I reach for Cleary's translation. Where other texts seem to get mired in language, The Taoist I Ching gets to source, always leaving me dialed in. Where another might have me considering specifics, this work nurtures my ability to let go and allow. I'm quite fond of this translation. I own both a softcover and digital edition.

I have several editions of the i-Ching, but this is the one I would take to a desert island. This iteration of the text and commentary is relatively recent -- 18th century -- and very well developed. Each book in Cleary's i-Ching trilogy -- Buddhist, Taoist and the Tao of Organization -- offers something unique and appealing. The Taoist i-Ching is the most metaphysical of the three and the most developed. Although the Buddhist i-Ching is a bit more human and friendly, Taoist thinking tends to mesh better with the underlying concepts. The Taoist i-Ching is based on Complete Reality Taoism, which is very adaptible to beliefs from all walks of life. The processes of yin and yang rising and falling are most prominent in the commentaries. Overall, the edition reads as a very modern take on the ancient text.

It is good to have many variations of translation of the I-Ching, to allow for the true meaning to be gleaned from each and allow for the variations to be revealed to the English speaking reader. I consult this book along with others to understand the meanings of the Sage.

I have been a student of the I Ching for forty-two years. For forty-one years I consulted Richard Wilhelm's translation. Last year I discovered this, Thomas Cleary, translation, and it is now the book I consult. This I Ching was written by the Taoist adept, Liu I-ming, "to show how the I Ching.....can be read as a guide to comprehensive self-realization while living an ordinary life in the world." (Thomas Cleary, Forward to The Taoist I Ching). Thus The Taoist I Ching simply best captures the essence of the teaching of the I Ching.
